Is Professional Caregiving Right for You?

Is Professional Caregiving Right for You?

Are you considering a career change into professional caregiving? If so, you may be questioning whether it's the right job for you. Professional caregiving could be the right career choice if you resonate with the following.

You're seeking a rewarding profession

One of the greatest motivations in a job is seeing the impact of your work. As a caregiver, you'll observe how your work positively affects your clients daily. By helping seniors with household tasks such as light housekeeping, meal preparation, medication reminders, and laundry, you're allowing them to remain independent. You might even help with personal grooming, mobility assistance, and transportation so m clients can continue living at home as they age, even as they face challenges with daily living. And many clients are not shy about expressing their gratitude because they sincerely appreciate the work of their caregivers.

You like spending time with others

Caregiving can be an independent job in terms of working alongside coworkers and having the autonomy to care for your clients, but you will be spending many hours of one-on-one time with seniors. While some clients require nonmedical assistance, others hire caregivers for companionship. It's not uncommon for seniors to experience loneliness and social isolation, increasing their risk for health complications, such as depression. Companionship may mean accompanying them to run errands, helping them use basic technology, watching their favorite movies and television shows, playing card games, or completing puzzles.

You're a self-starter

When working as a professional caregiver, you need to be a dependent self-starter. You are responsible for the care of your clients, and it's up to you to ensure you follow their care plans. You won't have a supervisor watching over you or a manager checking your work at the end of the day.

While there is a lot of independence as a caregiver, that is not to say you won't have people to turn to if you need help. You can always reach out to care coordinators, the office staff, or other caregivers if you have questions or concerns. At Visiting Angels, you are part of a team.

You're empathetic

Caregiving can be a fun and satisfying job most days, but there will enviably be days when your client is having a hard day, and it's up to you to remain empathetic and do what you can to ease their discomfort or worries. Somedays, your client might feel frustrated because their body doesn't move the way it once did. Or they might get terrible news about a progressing health condition. Whatever triggers their bad day, it's your job to show compassion and empathy, even if they're unfairly putting their emotions on you. Remember that aging comes with challenges, and do your best to remain calm, positive, and professional.

You want to give back to your community

Visiting Angels' offices are locally owned and operated, meaning the people who work at the home care agency are part of the community. We care about keeping our seniors safe and comfortable at home. As part of the Visiting Angels team, you'll be caring for neighbors and giving back to your community in a big way. Your role will focus on ensuring aging adults in your area can continue to live fully independent lives.
