Post-Operative Care at Home

After surgery, a patient will typically spend a night or two in the hospital, how long depends on the severity of the surgery. The goal of most patients and their doctor is to get home safely as soon as possible, however, depending on your circumstances, you simply are not equipped to take care of yourself and need help following your discharge plan. Your Visiting Angels caregiver will meet you at the hospital and review your discharge plan with you, your doctor and discharge planner to better assist you in following the instructions. Your caregiver will transport you home, stop and pick up any prescribed medications and get you home safe and sound! You will have a personal plan, designed for your individual recovery. Our caregivers will assist you with physical therapy, medication compliance, any hygiene and toileting issues you have due to the surgery. Your caregiver will track your status. Report any changes in your condition to your doctor and their staff—this is crucial if you begin to feel poorly.

An in-home safety assessment, which Visiting Angels can provide, may also be necessary to accommodate the patient while they recover. There are several things to consider such as whether or not the patient can use stairs, if they can walk to the bathroom, if there are objects that could be tripped over and more. We will discuss home modifications for post-operational recovery in another post, but for now, it’s something to think about as you settle back into your home.
