The holidays are often times filled with traveling from one destination to another. Whether you plan to go to a loved one’s house or you plan to visit friends in another area, it is important that you keep your senior in mind, especially if he or she has Alzheimer’s or dementia. Visiting Angels Home Care experts want to remind you that traveling can cause a lot of stress for your loved one, so it is important to keep them in mind as you plan.

If you ever find yourself in a position where you need help planning or preparing to travel with your loved one, do not hesitate to contact Visiting Angels Home Care. Our experts have provided tips below to help you get started.

Packing

  • Bring all medications your loved one needs with you
  • Pack comfortable clothes
  • Bring lots of snacks and water, especially in the instance that a delay may occur
  • Bring a list of all important numbers and contact for your loved one. This can include doctor’s pharmacies, and similar
  • Do have your loved one’s ID attached to them in some way in case they get lost

Planning

  • Take time to plan out the trip and create an itinerary that can be used
  • Plan for any and all delays that may occur and provide yourself with enough time so that you do not feel overwhelmed
  • Plan routes that are familiar to your loved ones
  • Avoid as much stress as you can

Traveling

  • Avoid becoming angry or stressed out, even when the situation is trying
  • If you notice that your loved one is anxious or frustrated, take a moment to pull over or take a time out until they calm down
  • Try to have a caregiver travel with you, if possible

Staying Overnight

  • Visiting Angels Home Care providers suggest that if you plan to stay in a hotel or motel that you inform the front desk staff about your loved one’s condition. This way, they can keep an eye out for him or her too
  • If you stay with any family or friends, alert them to the needs of your loved one and inform them about his or her condition

It is important for you to keep in mind that your loved one’s health matters the most and you should remain attentive to their needs. It can be difficult to pack and execute traveling with your loved one if you do not know where to begin. The experts at Visiting Home Care are always here to help. Call us today!
