Have Fun With Your Senior Loved One This Fall

Have Fun With Your Senior Loved One This Fall

Whether your senior loved one enjoys strolling outside to see the fall colors and feel the fall weather, or celebrating the changing seasons from the comfort of their own home, it is time to start planning some fall fun for them. Finding unique ways to enjoy the various seasons, holidays and traditions that go along with them is a great way to keep variety in the lives of our seniors, and it also helps give them something to look forward to.

Fall is a favorite season for many. For many it harkens back to the days of new beginnings, such as the beginning of their first college semester as a coed. Just the feel of the change in the air, and the smells, often reminds our senior loved ones of their younger days. Find out what fall memories your senior has, and what fun your senior is up for this year, and get to planning.

What Does Fall Mean to Them

Find out what your senior thinks of when they think of fall. Do they love seeing the autumnal flowers bloom and trees changing? Is their fall family tradition cheering on their football team, and donning their colors, for every game? Or do they associate fall more with certain foods and smells, like warm chili and burning leaves?

Have fun finding out from your senior what they loved about fall growing up, what they’d still like to do this fall, and find a way for that fun to happen. Just because they are aging doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy some of their favorite traditions. While they might not be able to do them all in the same way as before, there is plenty of fall fun to be had, often with slight modifications.

Get Outside

If they want to get out there and enjoy the sights and smells of fall, the possibilities for fun are endless. As the seasons change, nature shines. Find a scenic canyon with peak colors and head out for a drive. Gaze at the show the changing Sycamore, Black Walnut and Cottonwood trees put on, with their beautiful colors. Stop along the route for some photos. You might not be able to go on a long hike together, but pull off at a scenic overlook and see the wonders before you.

Several botanical gardens and parks host special fall events, and often indicate on their websites when the peak colors are changing. Keep an eye out for the best weekend to go. Many of those places also offer other fall fun along with the free show from nature. They have hayrides and crisp caramel apples for munching. They have fresh apple cider donuts and produce. And they have fall decorations galore. Find a favorite spot for your family to go.

Inside Autumnal Fun

If your senior wants to play it safe, and has some mobility issues, you might want to plan for fall fun at home - either in their backyard, on the porch or inside. Incorporate traditional fall flavors into their meals. Slice up fresh apples with their oatmeal. Find new recipes and make a pumpkin loaf or Swedish apple pie.

One of the easiest fall treats to make is simply slicing up apples, and drizzling caramel on top. It might be messy, but it’s delicious, and is most definitely a fall treat. Try to make a new chili recipe. Watch a fall-themed movie, as you gobble up the chili loaded with cheese and onions. If you can get out to enjoy the fall colors, find a fall-themed puzzle with trees adorned with beautiful red, orange and golden leaves. See what your senior would like to do, and help make that happen for them.
