New Year, New Chance to Make Memories With Your Senior Loved Ones

New Year, New Chance to Make Memories With Your Senior Loved Ones

It’s never too late to make new memories with your senior loved ones. As the new year begins, it is a great time to get started once again on memory making. If your senior loved one is declining physically or mentally, it is easy to think that all of their new experiences are in the past. But there still are many chances to spend time together and to create lasting memories while doing it. Get creative. Plan your days together. Whether you’re coming up with completely new experiences for you and your senior loved one, or reviewing the past together, the time is ripe for new memories and new opportunities to be together.

Look to the Past for New Memories

As you are looking for ways to make new memories with your senior loved one, often the inspiration can be found in the past. This is a great time to reach into your senior loved one’s memory bank, and pull out old stories, family trees, and information you’ve always wanted to know but have never taken the time to ask. Maybe you walk by their collection of antique plates each day, but never really took the time to notice them or learn where they came from. Find out from your loved one why those pieces are so important to them. Have them tell you where the antique China set that you use each Christmas originated from. Or find out if that Royal Doulton figurine came from your Grandma Marge, or if it is simply something your senior loved one picked up at a local antique shop

Photo albums also can provide hours of entertainment, discussion, and knowledge. Bring them out, and learn all you can about the friends and relatives on the pages in between the leather-bound covers. You may have skimmed through the pages in the past, only looking for photos of yourself. But now that you’re older and more interested, go through the albums with your senior loved one and listen to stories you’ve never heard before, or never took the time to pay attention to. Take time to listen to what they have to say, and learn about what is important to them about those moments in time captured on film.

Another great way to make new memories out of the past with your senior loved one is to take a walk or a ride through their old neighborhood. See the first house they lived in. See their first school. Find out if they walked to class each day, rode their bike or got a ride. See the corner shop where they stopped to buy candy on the way home. Listen to their memories of the area. Did any other relatives or friends you’ve heard about over the years live nearby? Where was their house of worship? Take time to find out about their past. You will likely be making new memories together as they tell you of their past.

Try Out the Latest Trends

Take a break from the past, and introduce your senior loved one to some of the latest and greatest inventions and trends. Go shopping together. Pick out an outfit. Chances are as you’re roaming the aisles, they will see fashions that remind them of their past, especially with the 70s looks back in fashion. Try out some of the newest coffee drinks at The Standard. Instead of their usual hot, black coffee, introduce your senior loved one to an iced chai and see what they think. While charcuterie boards may have been all the rage last Christmas, introduce them to the newest butter board this year. See what they think, and if it reminds them of any treat they used to have in their past. Show them the newest apps on your phone. Make a Tik Tok together or laugh while doing Snapchat filters together. They’ll get a kick out of the fun, ugly, and realistic filters, and you’ll have some photos of you and your senior loved one to add to your memories. No matter what new technology you choose to wow them with, just being together and experiencing it together, will make new memories for you both.
