How Seniors Can Keep the Benefits of Summer Going Strong

How Seniors Can Keep the Benefits of Summer Going Strong

Summer offers numerous health benefits, especially for older adults. There are more opportunities to spend outdoors, allowing seniors the chance to soak up vitamin D and ward off depression. Studies have found that even as little as 20 to 30 minutes of outdoor time, three times a week, is enough for seniors to reap the benefits nature has to offer. Seniors who spend time outdoors also reduce their risk of memory loss, decrease their blood pressure, and boost their immune systems.

As summer begins to fade into fall, older adults need to have a plan to help them stay healthy and strong. Here are four ways seniors can keep the benefits of summer going strong.

Keep Moving

No matter the season, exercise and staying active are important for seniors. Exercise helps seniors maintain and build muscle while reducing the risk of falls. It also improves mood and can reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Summer is often a season where more seniors are more active. From gardening to walking around the neighborhood, playing golf, or swimming, there are more opportunities for seniors to maintain an active lifestyle. As cooler temperatures arrive, seniors need to make a plan to stay active in the colder months. Look for senior exercise classes you can join this fall or join a neighborhood walking club. Think about other active opportunities you can pursue as the fall and winter seasons approach.

Start a Fall Garden

Another great way seniors can keep the benefits of summer going strong is to plant a fall garden. Cool-season crops thrive in the fall, allowing you to enjoy fresh vegetables well past the last frost date. Seeds or plants to try include beets, carrots, collards, radishes, broccoli, and spinach. If outdoor gardening is too burdensome, you can still enjoy the benefits of the outdoors by bringing nature inside. Try a window sill herb garden or liven up your home with indoor plants.

Eat Seasonally

Summer is often thought of as the best time for fruits and vegetables. However, there is plenty of produce that comes into season starting in September. Apples, blackberries, cantaloupe, grapes, melons, pears, plums, squash, bell peppers, collard greens, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, green beans, and eggplant are just some of the produce that reaches peak freshness in early fall. Seniors who eat seasonally can appreciate a lower grocery bill, as seasonal produce is often more affordable. They will also keep the benefits of summer going strong by consuming more nutrients found in selecting produce at its peak.

Create a Bucket List

The end of summer can be somewhat depressing for some seniors. Autumn reminds us all that another year is almost over and winter will soon arrive. Seniors can keep the benefits of summer going strong by creating a fall or winter bucket list. Writing down activities, events, or pursuits to do in the fall and winter can help seniors stay out of the end-of-summer funk. It can also help them stay active and engaged, especially if they include social opportunities. Some fun activities seniors may want to add to their bucket list include taking a fall foliage drive, participating in the neighborhood trick-or-treat, sipping apple cider with a friend, carving or painting a pumpkin, attending a fall or winter farmer’s market, baking seasonal desserts, or reading a few books.
