How to Create a Hygge Home

How to Create a Hygge Home

Hygge (pronounced "hoo-gah") is the Danish term for taking pleasure from life's simple, cozy things. It's a word that describes the mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. It means creating a peaceful and serene space that invites your household to slow down and feel calm. As the days grow shorter and winter draws near, November is the perfect month to create a hygge home. Here are our favorite ways older adults can perfect the art of coziness.

Create Cozy Spaces

Hygge starts with the environment. Add cozy, comfortable elements throughout your home. Spruce up your living room with comfy throw pillows and fluffy blankets. Add ambiance around your home with battery-operated candles. Declutter around the home and utilize baskets to contain games and movies. Use an essential oil diffuser to fill your home with pleasing aromas.

Bring the Outside In

Another aspect of hygge is nature. As we settle into the colder months, bring the outside in. Plant an indoor herb garden to enjoy throughout winter. Purchase potted plants to liven up your home. Create a cozy spot on your front or back porch so you can sit outside for a brief moment and enjoy the fresh air.

Sip on Warm Drinks

There's nothing like a warm drink to add comfort and coziness to your day. When the day is gloomy, brighten your mood by sipping on a warm beverage.  Purchase a variety of teas to try this winter. Stop by your favorite cafe to pick up a pumpkin spice latte. Keep hot cocoa in the pantry to warm yourself up when the temperatures begin to drop.

Order Take-Out and Watch a Movie

Order takeout from your favorite restaurant. Then, sit down watch your favorite feel-good movie.  Before the movie starts, slip into your coziest pajamas. Invite a few family members to enjoy an evening at home. Encourage your guests to wear their pajamas and bring a cozy blanket to wrap up in.

Make Your Own Sugar Scrub

Make a simple sugar scrub to add more pampering to your routine. In a small bowl, mix half a cup of white or brown sugar with half a cup of olive oil. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil (such as lavender) and stir together. Pour the scrub into a small mason jar and use it during a bath.

Tune In to Serenity

Set aside 15-20 minutes a day to relax and unwind. Play classical music while you enjoy a warm beverage. Silence your phone and quiet your thoughts. Listen carefully to the music and try to identify the different instruments that you hear. Focus on how the music makes you feel. Take it one step further by briefly journaling any thoughts or memories the songs evoke.
