Is Chocolate Good for Seniors?

February is often thought of as the month of hearts. Not only is it American Heart Month, but it’s also the month in which Valentine’s Day is celebrated. Among the top gifts given to commemorate this holiday is chocolate. From an assorted chocolate gift box to chocolate covered strawberries, stores are filled with various treats made from or covered in this delicious substance.

But chocolate, at times, has received a bad reputation as being a highly processed ingredient that contains a high sugar content. This is unfortunate because not all chocolate is the same. Depending on the type, chocolate has much to offer in regard to nutrients, including the senior population. Here are four observations about chocolate for seniors to consider.

Chocolate is High in Antioxidants

Cocoa, a key ingredient in chocolate, contains a high amount of antioxidants. Antioxidants help fight free radicals in the body that cause harm if their levels become too high. Free radicals have been linked to certain chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Consuming foods that contain antioxidants help the body neutralize these harmful compounds that damage the body’s cells. While antioxidants can be found in other foods, chocolate is a sweeter option to help seniors increase their intake of antioxidants.

Chocolate Could Prevent Memory Decline

Many older adults are concerned about protecting their memory as they age. Certain conditions can affect a senior’s memory, such as Alzheimer’s disease or other progressive diseases. Seniors may be surprised to learn that consuming chocolate can help prevent memory decline. Studies show that regular consumption of cocoa flavonoids is associated with better cognitive functioning, decreased risk of dementia, and lower risk of cognitive decline and cognitive impairment. It appears that seniors who are concerned about their memory can enjoy an occasional piece of chocolate, guilt-free.

Chocolate Reduces Risk for Stroke

Another surprising observation about chocolate consumption and seniors is that it appears to lower one’s risk of stroke. A Swedish study shared by the American Academy of Neurology found that men who consumed approximately one-third cup of chocolate chips per week had a lower risk for stroke than men who did not consume any chocolate at all. Again, the reduced risk for stroke seems to be related to the flavonoids found in chocolate.

Not All Chocolate is Created Equally

Although there appear to be numerous benefits of consuming chocolate for older adults, it’s important to state that not all chocolate is created equally. Some chocolates are filled with unhealthy ingredients and added chemicals that can cause more harm than good. It’s important for seniors to purchase quality chocolate to reap any health benefits. Furthermore, dark chocolate that contains 70 percent or higher cocoa content is healthier than milk chocolate.

In addition to consuming chocolate for their health, many seniors find comfort as they indulge in a chocolate bar.
