Palmer, Massachusetts, aka “The Town of Seven Railroads,” was founded in 1716. Five of the railroads are still operating today, one was built but never operated, and one was not completed. The once-busy Union Station, a magnificent Richardsonian Romanesque structure from 1884, has become a train-themed family restaurant, Steaming Tender, featuring hearty New England fare and wonderful artifacts from the railroad out in the yard. 

Palmer’s Public Library is one of the best in Western MA and has an entire room dedicated to the city’s 19th-century railroad history. On the third floor, the Quaboag Valley Historical Center has many books, maps, photos, and documents that tell the story of Palmer and the towns that surround it.

The Yankee Flea Market in Palmer is an impressive concentration of antiques with 200+ vendors over a whopping 16,000 square feet and includes an extensive array of antiques, including vintage signs, furniture, jewelry, license plates, dolls, toys, paintings, etc. Another terrific destination is the Palmer Antiques Co-Op, which has more than 100 dealers and fresh inventory on a regular basis. 

Near the bank of the Quaboag River, the Midura Conservation Area includes 222 acres of nature that are used for hunting (with permits), hiking, photography, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dog walking, nature study, and more.

Palmer is one of only thirteen municipalities in MA that have city forms of government but retain “The town of” in their official names. Composed of four separate and distinct villages, Palmer is home to a population of 12,448 as of the 2020 census, over a total area of 32 square miles, most of which is land.
