Helping Seniors Get Back into a Routine

As the COVID-19 crisis continues, many of us are trying to settle into our new norm. As the novelty of this situation begins to wane, Americans across the nation are feeling anxious and restless. Unfortunately, seniors are not exempt from such feelings. In fact, the lack of structure derived from a job or role as a parent to children living at home can cause them to lose focus.

As adults and children have already adapted their usual routine to follow stay-at-home orders, many seniors are continuing to struggle with finding their new norm. Their go-to places for socializing or entertainment are currently closed. Visits from family or friends that usually provided a reprieve from boredom can’t happen. While technology is allowing many events and visits to take place virtually, some seniors struggle with technology and are more isolated.

We are still a long way from seeing an end to the COVID-19 crisis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to recommend that seniors take extra precautions. Yet, it’s also important for seniors to get back into a routine. Routines not only help structure the day, but they also offer calm and purpose to someone struggling with anxiety or restlessness. If you’re a senior who is having difficulty finding your new norm, here are a few ideas to help you get back into a routine.

Stick to a Regular Sleep Schedule

Erratic sleep patterns destroy routines. Get back into your routine by sticking to a consistent sleep schedule. Give yourself something fun to look forward to in the morning so that you’re more likely to get out of bed at a decent hour. Program your coffee maker so you have a hot pot of coffee waiting for you. Spend the first few minutes of your day in gratitude or working the crossword puzzle. For a better night’s sleep, avoid taking a late afternoon nap, turn off all electronics an hour before bedtime, and unwind with a cup of chamomile tea. Waking up and going to bed around the same time each day is the foundation to getting back into a routine.

Get Dressed Each Day

Another tip to getting back into a routine is to get dressed and ready for the day. It’s tempting to lounge around in your pajamas all day, but there’s something motivating about getting ready for the day. You’ll feel better about yourself and feel more motivated to be productive. Even if you don’t have anywhere to go or any video calls to answer, make an effort to get ready for the day. Brush your hair and teeth, bathe regularly, put on a little makeup or shave. Pick a comfortable outfit and aim to be out of your pajamas by lunchtime.

Do Something Productive Each Day

Having a purpose for each day will help you get back into a routine. While you don’t have to spend your entire day working, setting aside an hour or so each day to do something productive will help you get back into your routine. Pick a time of day where you feel your best, so you’ll be more likely to complete the task at hand. A few productive ideas include cleaning an area of your home, organizing a closet, meal planning and preparation, or sorting through photographs. Being productive doesn’t necessarily mean hard work. Engaging in a hobby is also productive and should be included in your routine.

Limit Screen Time

It’s easy to turn to screens to help the day pass quickly. Whether you keep the television on all day for noise or spend most of your day scrolling through your phone, too much screen time can be the downfall of any routine. Stay on top of your routine by setting parameters around screen time. Turn off the television during your productivity hour. Engage in a hobby before scrolling through social media. Embrace the stillness of a quiet home, even if it’s for a few minutes.

Schedule Mealtimes

Finally, get back into a routine by scheduling meal and snack times. You can be lax with this but aim to eat your meals around the same time each day. This will help you set a rhythm for the day and will help prevent overeating if you tend to graze all day. Include nutritious foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein, at each meal so that you stay full until the next mealtime. Eating nutritious meals and snacks at regular intervals will give you the energy to be productive so that you can get back into your routine.

Routines are vital for any stage of life, including your senior years. While you have the flexibility to take each day a little more slowly than in your younger years, a lackadaisical approach to your routine will only foster feelings of anxiety and hopelessness.
