Visiting Angels Caregiver Graduates from Nursing School

Nursing Graduate Says Working for Visiting Angels During Her Studies Has Been a Great Experience

Alexis Mueller SOUTH ELGIN – Visiting Angles of South Elgin celebrates another nursing graduate leaving our team to pursue her dream. It is a bittersweet moment for our staff as we say goodbye to an amazing and compassionate caregiver like Alexis Mueller.

Mueller graduated in May of 2020 from Illinois State, Mennonite College of Nursing, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After graduating she plans to work as a nurse at the Women’s Care Unit at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, in Peoria IL.

How did a nursing student end up working for Visiting Angels? In the spring of 2019, Mueller was looking for an opportunity to work in her field of study while home on summer break. She saw an ad for Visiting Angels. Mueller applied and was hired as an in-home caregiver.

“I always loved taking care of people, I wanted to be that support system for someone else in their time of need,” Mueller said “I knew I was interested in health, the human body, and caring for people. Visiting Angels just fit for me.”

As Mueller continued pursuing her bachelor’s in nursing, she worked at Visiting Angels on school breaks whenever she was home.

While working as an in-home caregiver, Mueller was able to work independently with her clients. She grew in her leadership skills and captured how important it is to provide individualized care for her clients. Ultimately, she grew in her confidence and abilities.

“You have to be confident in your decisions, you don’t have a manger looking over your shoulder all the time. When you care for clients with Visiting Angels in a one-on-one care environment, you can learn so much more about them and provide individualized care,” Mueller said.

Working as a caregiver, Mueller gained practical, hands-on experience. She was constantly reassured that everything she was learning in school she could use. Going to school full-time can be difficult; Visiting Angels gave Mueller a flexible schedule and was understanding of her school schedule and commitments.

“Every time the office reached out to me it felt personal; I wasn’t just another employee to them,” Mueller said “They were understanding of my school and they made it a priority to give me hours during breaks. They were sincere and worked hard to help me.”

Mueller not only grew in her confidence, skills and understanding of client care during her time at Visiting Angels, she also grew in compassion.

“I worked with a handful of dementia clients and I could see the struggle in their eyes; they were confused but didn’t want to tell me. I would try so hard to get them to smile. When they would, it just made such a difference in their day and mine,” Mueller said “It really was a joy to impact my clients and make them smile. It warmed my heart to make a difference in their day.”

“Lexy Mueller distinguished herself with every client she served while working here at Visiting Angels.  She has been an ambassador of care in very uncertain times.  She brings an infectious positive attitude, a calming presence, a disarming smile, and a confidence in her skills that always set her clients at ease.  We can't wait to hear how she makes a difference in the lives of her patients as a nurse,” said Jay George, Operations Manager for Visiting Angels.
