Four Areas of Wellness Seniors Neglect and How to Change

Whether we like it or not, change is inevitable as we age. Seniors are privy to this and can attest to slower metabolism, unwanted weight gain, thinner skin, hearing and vision loss, and so on. Thinking about all the changes that we have little to no control over as we age is depressing. However, there are many areas of our health and well-being that are in our control. Seniors who prioritize their health needs find that they gain confidence and energy, even if they still find themselves moving slower than in previous years.

We may not be able to control the COVID-19 crisis, but we can control how we respond. By adapting routines to promote a healthier lifestyle, seniors can take back some control of their aging bodies. Here are four areas of wellness that seniors tend to neglect, and simple ways to change behaviors so that seniors can prioritize their well-being.

Thirst

As we age, our thirst sensation decreases, meaning that many seniors are often dehydrated. De-hydration often goes unrecognized and causes an array of health problems, such as confusion, difficulty in walking, dizziness, or low blood pressure. It’s important that seniors prioritize drinking water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Start the day with a glass of water before you reach for your coffee cup. Drink a glass of water before each meal. If you can’t stomach a full eight-ounce glass of water, start with four-ounces and drink more often throughout the day. If you feel thirsty, recognize that you’re already dehydrated and need to take the time to replenish fluids.

Skin Care

Another area of wellness that seniors often neglect is skin care. Yet, our skin is a major organ that has many important functions to perform. It reflects internal health conditions that many seniors are more prone to, such as liver and kidney disease, allergies, and more. Most importantly, our skin is our first line of defense against environmental hazards, including bacteria and viruses. Start prioritizing your skin by applying sunscreen before you head outdoors. When you’re able, schedule a skin screening appointment with a dermatologist. Discuss which vitamins you should add to your diet to care for your skin, as well as other skin care regimens that you should adapt into your routine.

Dental Care

Although not intentional, it is easy for seniors to neglect their dental care. Over time, the tough enamel that protects teeth from decay begins to wear away, leaving teeth susceptible to cavities. Seniors are also more at risk for gum disease and can experience dry mouth due to age or as a side effect of certain prescription medications. Dry mouth can lead to further tooth decay if not managed properly. Dental care is important for seniors, including those that have dental implants or dentures. Make a habit of brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Schedule regular dental appointments instead of waiting for a toothache to make an appointment. Care for both your oral hygiene and hydration by drinking water to ward off dry mouth.

Companionship

In addition to thirst, skin care, and dental care, many seniors neglect their social health and well-being. It’s an area that’s often neglected because it’s easily not associated with one’s physical health. Yet, staying connected and engaging in relationships is vital to everyone’s health. Social distancing has made this more challenging for seniors, who already have enough barriers that stand in the way of maintaining friendships. However, neglecting social connections can lead to feelings of loneliness, isolation, and depression. Ward off such feelings by reaching out to others via phone calls or virtual visits. Participate in safe, social distancing visits. Social distancing does not mean you need to be socially isolated.
