Long-Term Care Planning

Long-Term Care Planning

There’s always something to plan for in life. When you’re in high school, you prepare for college. In college, you start to think about your career. And as soon as you start your first job, you’re planning for retirement, family savings, and other life milestones. As you age, you begin to understand the importance of planning, especially regarding your health and finances. One aspect some older adults forget to plan between retirement and the end of life is their long-term care plan.

What is long-term care?

Long-term care typically includes any services you may require outside of routine medical or emergency care. Long-term care is moving to an assisted living community or nursing home for some individuals. Others choose to stay home and hire a professional caregiver, CNA, or at-home nurse. Whatever option you choose, having a plan for your future makes incorporating care into your life much more seamless when you need it.

What to consider in your long-term care plan

A lot goes into making a long-term care plan, from what type of care you think you need to who will provide that care and how to pay for it.

Types of care you may need

Every person requires a different level of care as they age. Two popular care options include companion care and personal care. Companion care is when a caregiver helps with daily activities like light housekeeping, transportation, or meal preparations. Personal care can include the same tasks as companion care but includes more hands-on assistance with things like mobility, toileting, showering, and dressing. You can receive both these care types, and many others, in an assisted living community or through at-home care agencies like Visiting Angels.

Who will provide the care

If you plan on living independently, you may want to consider having someone visit with you throughout the week to assist with any tasks you may have trouble completing on your own. This person can be a neighbor, family member, or friend. You can also consider hiring a professional caregiver for part-time or full-time shifts to assist with nonmedical tasks like light housekeeping, medication reminders, or personal grooming.

Where will you live

Your current residence may not be where you plan to live in the next five to ten years. Do you plan to retire to a warmer climate or move closer to family? Are you considering downsizing to save money? Are there cities or states with a more accessible cost of living? Knowing where you plan to spend your later years can help you decide on specifics, such as what caregivers or nurses to hire, and you’ll better understand how much it’ll cost.

Finances

Insurance doesn’t always cover nonmedical care services, so it’s essential to establish a financial plan to cover the costs. Research the average price of various care services, such as hiring an at-home caregiver, to determine if those services will fit within your budget. If you expect services to cost a lot out of pocket, consider setting up a savings account or finding other ways to invest your money so you’ll have the funds in the future.
