Preparing Your Garden for the New Season

Preparing Your Garden for the New Season

Spring has finally sprung, which means it's time to start preparing your garden for the new season. Whether you're planning to grow an entire produce section in your backyard, sticking to a small herb garden in your kitchen, or starting a garden for the first time, consider these tips to make the best of your garden this spring.

Get Everything in Order

Before starting any gardening work, go through your supplies and take stock of what you have and need. Examine your tools, check your fertilizer, and look at your soil. Is everything still in good shape? Is there anything you're missing that you don't have, such as a gardening seat, new pots, or fresh seeds? Make a list of everything you need to purchase, then head to your local gardening store to stock up on the essentials.

Clear Out Your Garden Beds

If you're planting an outdoor garden, you'll want to clean the garden beds from weeds, debris, and mulch. Remove any live weeding by pulling them from as close to the ground as possible to ensure you remove the roots. Place the weeds in a bucket and discard them away from the garden to prevent regrowth. As you're clearing weeds, remove any unnatural substances they may have blown into your garden.

Damages in a planter can allow soil, water, and nutrients to escape, making it difficult for your plants to thrive. If you're planting an indoor garden, clean out your planters with warm water and inspect them for any cracks or breakage. If you notice any deficiencies in your planters, consider purchasing new ones.

Decide on Your Plants

Once you've cleaned and prepped your gardens, the next step is to decide what you're going to grow. When choosing, consider the space, how much sunlight the plant will get, the purpose of your garden, and how much work you want to put into caring for your plants.

  • Space- How much space do you have for your plants? If you have a window planter or want a plant to hang from an awning, you may want to consider a small flower that doesn't need a lot of space to thrive. If you have a large garden bed in your yard, you may want to grow melons or squash, which grow on ground vines that can expand the width of the garden.
  • Sunlight- How much direct sunlight will your plants get daily? Some plants, such as Lantanas, Wave Petunias, or Marigolds, love hot and sunny environments. Other plants, such as Primrose, prefer cool and shaded spots to grow.
  • Purpose- What is the purpose of your garden? Do you want to grow fruits and vegetables to eat, or do you want to create a beautiful aesthetic for your yard? Knowing what you're using the garden for will help you decide the types of plants or seeds you purchase.
  • Care- How much time or effort do you want to commit to caring for your garden? Shrubs and trees are great options if you're going to plant something and let it take care of itself. However, if you want a hands-on garden, tons of vegetable and flower choices require regular daily or weekly attention.
