Transitioning to a Career in Home Care

Transitioning to a Career in Home Care

According to the United States Census Bureau, all Baby Boomers will reach 65 by 2030. That means nearly 73 million Americans will enter a stage of life when they start considering alternative care options, such as at-home care. Not only is a significant portion of the population aging, but there's also an increase in the desire to age at home. These two statistics make professional and at-home caregiving a growing career option in the United States.

What is Home Care

Home care is when a professional caregiver assistances an aging adult with non-medical tasks around the home. Duties include light housekeeping, cooking, laundry, personal grooming, and medication reminders. Some caregivers also help transport clients to doctor appointments or to run errands. The primary goal of home care is to help seniors age comfortably and safely at their homes.

As you grow within your role as a caregiver, you can continue your training to care for specialized groups, such as seniors with dementia or Parkinson's. Some caregivers also help clients transition back home after a surgery or hospital visit to reduce their chances of readmission. As a caregiver, you may also work as part of a hospice team to help seniors and their families transition into the final stage of life.

Working with Visiting Angels

A career as a caregiver is a rewarding experience, but it's also essential to find an agency that cares for its employees and clients equally. We hire compassionate and hardworking individuals at Visiting Angels and show our appreciation with competitive hourly pay, benefits, and flexible scheduling. We also offer our employee appreciation in small ways, such as social media shoutouts, bonuses, office perks, and more.

One of the beloved aspects of working with Visiting Angels from an employee's perspective is how we take our time to match caregivers and clients. As a caregiver, you're going to spend a lot of one-on-one time with your clients, so it's vital that you each feel comfortable with one another. Our care coordinators get to know each client before services begin and do our best to match caregivers with seniors with similar personalities and interests to help solidify a trusted bond. We also consider each client's location, so you don't have to commute too far to care for someone.

Even after your official training ends, the office staff, care coordinators, and other caregivers can answer questions and provide guidance while you work. We pride ourselves on efficient communication and encourage all employees to ask questions and seek help whenever they need it.
