Dementia Care and Symptoms

At Visiting Angels of West Springfield, we take Dementia Care and Symptoms seriously and always address them in a timely manner.  When your loved one chooses in-home care from a top provider, you expect them to take care of that family member or friend with passionate care and attentive detail.

That is exactly what our Caregivers continue to do on top of their regular job duties, by looking out for signs and symptoms of dementia in seniors and older adults.  Dementia can come in many forms; however, the common definition for dementia is as follows:

Dementia is a general term that describes a group of symptoms such as loss

of memory, judgement, language, complex motor skills, and other intellectual

function caused by permanent damage of death of the brain’s nerve cells, or

neurons.

Although Dementia is a general term that is characterized by certain conditions, it is not a disease in itself.  The disease that most likely will cause Dementia in older adults and seniors is what we all know as Alzheimer’s Disease.  Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common cause of Dementia and accounts for about 60 percent of all Dementia cases.

There are a number of severe signs and symptoms that may be more obvious that your loved one has dementia.  However, a few less distinguishable warning signs include:

  • Trouble with new memories
  • Trouble finding words
  • Confusion about time, place or people
  • Personality changes
  • Loss of interest
  • Expressing false beliefs
  • And many other early warning signs

Early symptoms of Dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease may go unnoticed by the untrained eye; however, all of our Caregivers are trained to be aware of and report any and all signs of Dementia immediately to our main office.  From there, we will assess the symptoms and bring together the family to make important decisions about their loved one and the seriousness of their condition.

If you are looking for in-home care or to learn more about Dementia care, training or warning signs, then feel free to reach out to us any time at (413)733-6900 today!
