3 Ways to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

3 Ways to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in women behind skin cancer. It affects millions of Americans and is an aggressive disease that requires research and care to find the best treatments. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, the perfect time to learn more about the condition and ways you can support the fight against breast cancer.

Encourage Regular Mammograms

A mammogram is an X-ray picture of the breast that doctors use to detect early signs of breast cancer. Most doctors advise women between 45 and 54 to get mammograms every year, and those older than 55 should get a mammogram every two years. Mammograms are the best tests doctors have to find breast cancer early, at times up to three years before a noticeable lump forms in the breast tissue.

A mammogram begins with the patient standing in front of an X-ray machine. A technician will place the patient's breast on a plastic plate while another plate will firmly press onto the top of the breast. The plates flatten the breast, holding it in place while the X-ray takes images. These steps are repeated to get all angles of the breast. It is common to feel discomfort during a mammogram, but tests are quick and life-saving.

Unfortunately, some women cannot afford to get regular mammograms. In addition to educating others on the importance of mammograms, you can donate a mammogram to a woman in need through the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Start a Fundraiser

Fundraising can provide women with free resources, education about their breast health and screenings, and a support system as they walk through the complex cancer care system. You can start a fundraiser for any reputable breast cancer organization like the National Breast Cancer Foundation or Susan G. Komen Foundation

There are a ton of ways to raise funds for an organization. You can host a fundraiser through social media where individuals can donate money through a link on a post you share. If you work for a large company, you can encourage your boss to match any donations you bring in from friends and family. You can have a rummage sale or host an event and donate the proceeds. Whatever fundraising option you choose, be sure to thank anyone who donated and know how their donation helped the cause.

Donate to Breast Cancer Research

If running a fundraiser is too much to take on, keep it simple with a personal donation to a breast cancer organization you support. Most organizations accept one-time donations, or you can set up a reoccurring monthly donation. You can also donate to a family or friend in your life living with breast cancer. Your gift can provide early detection services, breast health education, and support for those facing breast cancer.
