How to Get Your Groove Back This Spring

How to Get Your Groove Back This Spring

It has been a long, chilly winter and the spring vibes are beginning to deliver our sweet payoff. It can be challenging to get back in that warm weather mindset this year after the chill of the winter and the pandemic's isolation. But with the temperature beginning to rise and covid vaccine becoming increasingly available, it's a good time to start thinking about what you need to start feeling like your old self again.

While we still have to take precautions and be covid careful, there's still plenty we can do to get our groove back this spring. Here's how to get started.

Plan an Outing

Make a plan with your Visiting Angels Chelmsford Caregiver and get yourself out into nature. Take a walk in the park. Sit by a pond or river. Visit your favorite spot in the woods. Listen to the birds and the sounds of the breeze in the trees. Just be there.

We've been in our homes for a long stretch. Being outdoor is good for the body and the soul. The CDC explains: "Spending time outdoors can improve overall health and wellness. . . Time outdoors may also promote mental health and stress reduction."

One of the challenges of aging is that we don't have the control that we once did. Your VA caregiver can help by ensuring that you get opportunities to be outdoors doing what you love. Embrace that opportunity starting this spring and make it a habit throughout the warmer months.

Spring Clean

It feels great to open the windows, wash the curtains, clean the floors, sweep away the dust, and freshen up your space for a whole new season. Your Visiting Angels Chelmsford Caregiver can help with some of these chores, and perhaps you can call in your team of kids, grandkids, and family members to assist with the deeper work. With windows open and masks on, you can get your space shaped up in a covid-safe way that leaves your home feeling springtime fresh.

Take a Class

While it may still seem like wishful thinking, community centers and libraries are beginning to plan their summer programs, hoping that many residents will soon be vaccinated. While they can't be sure that everyone will have the chance to get their shots, many seniors have or will soon have the opportunity to get both rounds of vaccines and therefore, carefully participate in card parties, dance classes, yoga sessions and swim lessons. Check with your doctor and get yourself signed up. Your Visiting Angels Chelmsford Caregiver can help you get to and from your sessions. So, start thinking about what you'd like to learn, practice, and hone this summer!

If you're not feeling ready to be out in public just yet, you may consider taking an online course this spring or summer. Start with our Social Care program, which can help you get comfortable online.

Start a Healthy Routine

Sometimes, just a walk around the neighborhood or an indoor track weekly or bi-weekly is a good habit to start as the seasons change. It can be hard to start a good habit, but with the support of your Visiting Angels Chelmsford Caregiver, you can start small and build. Talk with your doctor, and make sure that regular exercise is a good fit for you. Once you get the thumbs up, arrange the exercise during your visit.

The CDC advises that regular exercise is good for seniors' health: "As an older adult, regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. It can prevent many of the health problems that seem to come with age. It also helps your muscles grow stronger so you can keep doing your day-to-day activities without becoming dependent on others."
