How Seniors Can Stay Safe While Still Enjoying the Summer
Summer is all about barbeques, picnics, fishing trips, and lots of fun in the sun! However, extreme temperatures and prolonged exposure to sunlight can increase seniors’ risk of heat exhaustion, sunburn, and dehydration.
It’s important for older adults to protect themselves while enjoying summer to the fullest. Use these handy tips to have a safe and enjoyable summer.
Drink Plenty of H20
If you’re feeling thirsty, chances are you’re already dehydrated. As we age, our awareness of thirst declines. This makes seniors more vulnerable to dehydration.
Older adults must be aware of common symptoms of dehydration. These include:
- Dizziness
- Dry mouth
- Headaches
- Rapid pulse
- Confusion
- Muscle cramps
- Dark-colored urine or less urination
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, drink water immediately. If you’re heading outside, bring a water bottle with you. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water per day.
Protect Your Skin
Another big risk that seniors face during the summer months is skin damage. As you get older, the elasticity and amount of moisture your skin retains change. Additionally, older adults have weaker immune systems. These factors make seniors’ skin more vulnerable to the sun’s harmful UV rays.
You must protect your skin from the sun if you plan on spending the day outdoors. Generously apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming.
Wear light-colored, light-weight, long-sleeved shirts and long pants for further skin protection. Protect your face with wide-brimmed hats and UV-filtering sunglasses.
Avoid venturing outside between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM. This is when the sun’s rays are strongest.
Keep Your Cool
Colorado is known for its hot summers. With temperatures often spiking about 80 degrees, seniors must stay cool. Heat-related medical conditions are dangerous and can be caused by excess sun exposure, dehydration, and staying outside during hot temperatures.
Heat stroke and heat exhaustion are serious risks for seniors during the summer. The top symptoms of heat-related health problems include:
- Flushed, red skin
- Rapid pulse
- Nausea
- Dizziness and confusion
- Fainting
- Headache
- Fatigue
If you experience any of these symptoms, sit down in a cool, shady spot or head inside into the air conditioning. Drink water or beverages with electrolytes, such as sports drinks. Applying a cold compress to your forehead also helps. If your symptoms don’t subside, seek medical attention immediately.
Understand Your Meds
Some medications can make seniors more sensitive to hot temperatures and sunlight. These meds can include antibiotics, cholesterol-lowering medications, retinoids, and antifungals. Consult your doctor to see if any medications you take can increase your risk during the summer.
