How connection with others makes us healthy and happy

Cultivating connection and a sense of belonging is more than just nice to have; it’s necessary for leading a healthy life. The CDC explains: “Research has shown that for older adults, staying engaged in enjoyable activities is associated with better physical and mental health.” No doubt, it has been challenging during the pandemic to stay connected with others. But the effort is worth it. The CDC further explains: “As we age, being involved with others is strongly associated with better brain function. So, it is not only fun, it is good for you! You might not have ever imagined that while you were singing in the church choir, or meeting with your book club, or volunteering at the animal shelter that you were actually improving your brain health!”

While we may be limited in what we can do right now to connect with others, the news about the pandemic is looking a bit more optimistic as more seniors are vaccinated. We are learning more about what it is safe to do as more significant percentages of the population have received both rounds of vaccines.

In the meantime, there are some things we can do now to connect with others. Visiting Angels of Hurst, Texas, supports our clients in their ambition to stay healthy and connected. Here’s how we help.

Companionship

Our caregivers genuinely have a heart for caring for seniors. Sometimes, especially during these difficult days of the pandemic, it’s helpful to know that someone is stopping by to see your loved one and to spend some time with them. Our caregivers enjoy reading, walking, playing cards and sharing companionship with our clients.

Besides stopping for a visit, we provide services such as grocery shopping, transportation support, walking assistance, light housekeeping, bathing and dressing, and running errands. These errands may include a medical visit, a trip to an exercise class, or a walk at the park. Our caregivers aim to make their visits fun, joyful, and productive. We recognize that our clients need interaction and companionship, just as much as they need their medications and meals. We support our clients holistically and not only their physical needs.

Social Care

Learning to be safe and fluent online is important, especially during a pandemic. Often, seniors are hesitant to learn online fluency because they feel ill-equip, too far behind or out of the loop. We invite seniors to work with a professional from Visiting Angels Hurst who can help them get comfortable online and on social media through our Social Care Program. We work at a pace that suits seniors. We get it that they may adjust to this technology more slowly, and we are happy to go at a pace that works for them until they feel confident and secure.

Connecting online is fun, engaging, and helpful during the pandemic. Think of how impressed your loved one’s children and grandchildren will be when they get an invitation to connect from grandma or grandpa! It’s a great way to reach out and connect!

Respite Care

We are routinely impressed with the quality of care that we see from family caregivers. They are kind and generous supporters who sign on for a challenging role. We know, too, though, that family caregivers can find themselves in a difficult spot. The work is hard, and to keep up with it, they can find themselves getting cut off from friends and family and being overtaken by care demands. Family caregivers need support. They need check-ins from their friends and family.

They also need breaks. Respite Care is an important way to support the family caregiver in your life. It gives them the chance to take a day or a weekend off to reconnect with themselves and their social network, away from the demands of caregiving.

Offering a family caregiver an opportunity for respite care puts them back in touch with themselves. We all need routine breaks. Arrange that for the caregiver in your life.

A Network for Care

Having a robust support network is vital for all of us, seniors too. Visiting Angels Hurst, Texas, is proud to be a link in that network for our clients. Visit us online or call 817-952-3223 to connect.
