Home Care for Veterans
Visiting Angels is committed to providing high-quality and compassionate at-home care for aging veterans in Jacksonville, North Carolina. We aim to do so in a way that honors their service while also respecting their dignity and independence.
The main problem that a lot of veterans and their families have, however, is the rising cost of at-home care. This is becoming even more apparent as the number of elderly veterans continues to grow. The good news is that veterans who have served in the U.S. military, including the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard — are actually eligible for at-home personal care benefits from the Veterans Administration (VA).
How to Know if You Qualify for Veterans’ Benefits
To be eligible for financial assistance that includes 24/7 at-home care, you should ideally meet the following criteria:
- You have previously served in the military, naval, marine, or air service
- You were not dishonorably discharged from service — all other conditions are acceptable
- You are part of the current and former members of the Reserves or National Guard. You were called to active duty by a federal order and have already completed the period of active duty requested of you.
How Does Veterans’ Benefits Work?
U.S. veterans may qualify for health benefits, including personalized at-home care benefits, through the Aid and Attendance or the Community Care Network programs:
Aid and Attendance Program
If you are a veteran receiving a VA pension, you may qualify for Aid and Attendance benefits. If you require special assistance, such as at-home care, then the VA may grant you support. This covers you if you are bed-bound, need help with daily activities, are living in a nursing home, or have damaged eyesight.
If you are a veteran who spends most of your time at home due to a permanent disability, you may also qualify for “housebound” benefits. These benefits are usually paid directly to you, the veteran, and added to your monthly pension.
Community Care Network Program
If you already qualify for Community Care Network benefits, you may also be eligible for assistance with at-home care costs. You will be assigned a dedicated service care coordinator who will compute the number of hours per week you require in terms of care.
The coordinator will also help you and your family contact caregivers in your area. However, the difference between Aid and Attendance benefits and Community Care Network benefits is that the latter is paid directly to partner organizations, not the veteran.

When Should I Apply For Veterans’ Benefits?
Veterans' benefits applications usually take a substantially lengthy processing time. As such, the best time to apply for at-home care benefits is before you have to use them. We recommend starting the application as soon as possible to avoid spending your money on home care while waiting for approval
