Staying Safe Online

Staying Safe Online

We live in an online world. Whether browsing web pages on your computer, connecting with friends on social media through your smartphone, or streaming a new movie on your television, nearly all Americans use the internet daily. While online has many benefits, there are also potential risks. However, understanding those risks and taking preventive measures can help you have a safer online experience.

How do I stay safe online?

Keeping yourself safe is easy as long as you understand the potential risks of being online and take the proper precautions. Consider the following tips to avoid harm while on your computer, phone, or any other smart device.

Never share personal information online

Online scams are becoming more sophisticated daily; unfortunately, many target older adults. Scammers typically try to contact you via email or social media to gather your personal information to commit identity theft. Some scammers pose as government officials or credit card representatives and ask you to verify your data.

Never share your address, social security number, credit card number, or banking information online. No one needs access to that information to expect you and your trusted loved ones. If someone claims they are the IRS or a representative from a company you work with, they are not. The IRS doesn’t contact people via email, and no reputable company would ask you to send personal info through email.

Install antivirus software on your computer and smart devices

Computers, smartphones, tablets, and other devices are susceptible to viruses. A virus is a code that copies itself and can corrupt your system or destroy personal data. Your device can get a virus through online downloads, infected email attached, or using an insecure network.

Antivirus software prevents, scans, detects, and deletes viruses from your computer and other smart devices. Some software can protect your files and hardware and block dangerous websites and popups. Once you install them, they run independently, automatically removing anything unsafe, so your device doesn’t get infected.

Use strong passwords on your accounts

You want your online passwords to be solid and secure to keep any online information safe—the stronger the password, the less risk you have of people hacking into your account. You also want to try not to have the same password for everything. You also want to avoid using common words or sequential numbers.

A good password should include the following:

  • A mix of upper and lower case letters
  • At least one unique character, such as $ or #
  • At least 8 characters

Verify links before clicking on them

Some links in an email or webpage may open up your computer or smartphone to viruses. Other links may be scam attempts to steal your personal information. Don’t click on a link if you’re unsure where a link is from or where it’s going. If you accidentally click on an unknown link, don’t fill out any forms on the page and exit the page as soon as possible. You’ll then want to disconnect your device from the internet and use antivirus software to scan your computer for potential threats.

Don’t communicate with people you don’t know

Some scammers online will play the long game, meaning they’ll work to befriend you and build your trust. Once you feel like you’re friends, the scammer will ask you to send them money or share personal information. If someone you don’t know tries to friend you on social media or starts emailing you, ignore it. You can block and report if they continue to send requests or messages.
