Watching a loved one experience Alzheimer's can be heartbreaking. It's hard to watch when someone you care about is dealing with so much pain and confusion. At Visiting Angels® Lexington, we offer Alzheimer's care to those who need it. We understand the unique challenges of this condition—for those who have it as well as their families.

If a family member is having trouble recognizing you, it can be especially upsetting. Let's look at what might help.

How To Cope When A Loved One Doesn't Remember You

Failure to recognize loved ones is a common sign of middle or late stages of Alzheimer's. If your family member is struggling to identify you, it's truly not personal. They may be experiencing lapses in their memory, difficulties with vision, delirium, or other contributing factors.

From our caregivers at Visiting Angels Lexington, here's some recommendations:

  • Don't quiz them. For those with Alzheimer's, the challenges that come with this condition can be overwhelming, distressing, and disorienting. They may lash out or get upset when someone approaches them and asks, "Do you remember me?" Don't test their knowledge. Chat with them and see if they recognize you in the process.
  • Show them photos. Photos can be a powerful reminder for those with memory disorders—especially photos from a time they remember. Try to find older photos of yourself, including photos of you together. Reviewing these photos together can be a pleasant way to connect, and to remind your loved one of your relationship.
  •  Try again later. Some days are easier than others. If your family member can't remember you today, it's possible that they'll recognize you in a few days. Cherish the days where they remember you, and understand that every day might be different.
  • Make sure they have support. It's likely that your loved one is struggling with other aspects of daily living at this stage. It's important to make sure they have the support needed to live at home safely and comfortably. Professional Alzheimer's care can make all the difference to their quality of life.
