2. Ask simple questions. Avoid open-ended questions when possible. Instead, phrase questions to elicit a yes or no response. Or give a choice of answers. For example, instead of asking “what would you like for breakfast?” try “would you like eggs or cereal for breakfast?”
3. Respond with reassurance. Dementia can distort reality and make seemingly simple questions confusing and upsetting. Instead of convincing your loved one they are mistaken, acknowledge their genuine feelings and offer comfort and support.
