Let’s Talk Coffee: Appropriate Caffeine Consumption for Older Adults

March is National Caffeine Awareness Month, which reminds us that our sixth cup of coffee may be harmful to our health. It is no surprise that many older adults enjoy a cup of coffee or two each day. On average, 70 percent of seniors consumed coffee daily in 2020. Not only are seniors more likely to drink coffee, but they typically consume up to three times the amount of coffee than younger generations.

Why should seniors consume caffeine?

One primary reason why seniors should consume caffeine is its antioxidant properties. Numerous studies have found health benefits to consuming caffeine, particularly coffee, for older adults. One study suggests that drinking one cup of coffee a week can lower the risk of stroke or heart disease. Caffeine has also been associated with improved cognition and reaction times in low doses. Another study supports consuming coffee as a way to prevent dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. A more recent study links longer life with coffee consumption.

In addition to physical health benefits, coffee also seems to improve mental health. It can lower the risk of depression in older adult women and bring on feelings of well-being. Starting the day with a fresh cup of coffee can also help start the day with a fresh, happier mood.

What are the health risks associated with caffeine?

Although there are many health benefits to consuming caffeine, too much caffeine poses health risks for older adults. In addition to being an antioxidant, caffeine is also a stimulant. When you drink coffee or caffeine in other forms, you increase activity in the central nervous system. Too much caffeine can result in jittery feelings and exasperate anxiety.

Caffeine elevates heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure. It can speed up digestion and worsen acid reflux because of its high acidity. Too much caffeine can cause headaches or dehydration. Dehydration is a significant concern for many older adults because the thirst response diminishes with age.

If consumed too close to bedtime, caffeine can interfere with a good night’s sleep. Many seniors already struggle with insomnia. Caffeine only contributes to restlessness.

How much caffeine should older adults consume?

The Mayo Clinic recommends up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day for most healthy adults. That equates to about four cups of coffee. Older adults with chronic health conditions, especially related to the heart, should always consult their primary care physician before consuming caffeine. It’s also best to talk with your doctor or pharmacists about whether or not your medications will interact with caffeine.

Keep in mind that caffeine is found in other sources beyond coffee. Teas, sodas, energy drinks, and decaffeinated coffee also contain some caffeine. Some foods, too, can contain caffeine, such as chocolate, cocoa, protein bars, and coffee-flavored ice cream. Remember to include all sources of caffeine in your daily caffeine intake. Aim to consume caffeine in moderation to gain health benefits.
