Winter Storm Guide for Seniors

Winter Storm Guide for Seniors

Pittsburgh's winter weather can be fierce, posing significant challenges, especially for seniors living independently. The fear of power outages, falling trees, pipe leaks, and other hazards loom large, leaving older adults particularly vulnerable during the colder months.

Essential Tips for For Severe Winter Weather

With a bit of proactive preparation, seniors can mitigate the potential risks associated with the harsh winter conditions and confidently navigate through the season. The following five practical tips can empower seniors to stay safe and secure when a winter storm is on the horizon, ensuring their well-being and peace of mind throughout the challenging weather.

Stay Warm

Hypothermia is a severe concern for older adults if they’re not adequately heating their homes. Keep your thermostat at a minimum of 68-70 degrees to prevent your body and furnace from working overtime. Contact the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services if you struggle to pay your heating bill and could use assistance.

Set Up Weather Alerts

Older adults need to stay informed during the winter storm season. Sign up for weather alerts from CodeRED PA and local news stations to receive text message updates in the event of severe weather.

Create a Safety Kit

When a storm is expected, be sure to have your cell phone charged and backup battery packs ready to go in case of power outages. Double-check that you have working flashlights and candles within reach. Stock up on prescriptions and needed medical supplies if you cannot get to a pharmacy for a few days. Additionally, items like a manual can opener, extra blankets, a first aid kit, and plenty of non-perishable food can be handy.

Have an Emergency Plan

Have a plan in the event of a power outage or other emergency circumstances. You may need to leave your home if you rely on medical devices that require electricity. Make sure you have the phone numbers of neighbors, close friends, and family saved in case you need to relocate to their house until power is restored. Fill your gas tank and check tire pressure before inclement weather, or arrange reliable transportation if you cannot drive.

Arrange for Snow Removal

Older adults are at a heightened risk for heart attacks, stroke, and other injuries when shoveling snow on their own. Have snow plowing and salting services set up before heavy storms so that you can safely walk down or exit your driveway without risking your health.
