How To Know When Your Parent Needs More Help

How To Know When Your Parent Needs More Help

Most people appreciate a helping hand, no matter how small. Help can look like holding the door when it's raining or paying it forward in the coffee line. The act of helping someone without them asking puts a smile on a stranger's face. We can share from experience that our Visiting Angels Rockwall, Texas, clients appreciate a helping hand, too, especially since they tend to want to do things themselves.

Often aging adults find it difficult to ask for help, as it may seem like a sign of independence loss or weakness. This is especially true for our aging parents – hiding or downplaying their issues is one of the things they tend to do, especially with their children. They like being independent and in control of their lives for as long as possible. Sometimes, you might not even know if they need assistance until an unexpected decline in health or an accident takes place.

It's essential to regularly monitor your parents' physical and mental well-being with a critical eye. Here are some typical changes our Visiting Angels Rockwall team has experienced with senior clients needing more help.

Behavioral Changes

Your mom might not have the energy to go grocery shopping on some days. Your dad might not feel like going out as often as he used to. They might not even call you back if they don't feel like it. These are the behavioral changes that come along with age, and they are normal. However, if your aging parents begin losing interest in hobbies and display frequent mood changes, this could mean they could soon need additional care or companionship care.

Neglected Household

There may have been a time when your parents kept a spotless home, but you may see a slight decline over time. Is there more clutter or trash piled up? Unopened mail? Expired food in the pantry? This could mean that they've lost some energy and drive to clean as they did in the past, but it could also indicate the beginnings of mental decline. Remember, minor incidences aren't as much of a problem as consistent, ongoing household neglect.

Physical Changes

Physical changes are visible but can be like household neglect; you should look for consistent signs over time. Weight loss, unkempt hair, nails, and overall poor personal hygiene are a few signs that your parents need more help when it comes to taking care of themselves.

Weight loss on its own might result from food insecurity–being unable to visit the grocery store or problems fixing meals– or possibly from illness. Encourage your aging parents to talk to a doctor if you're concerned.

Memory and Cognitive Changes

Memory loss is common as we age. It may start with losing track of keys or forgetting a birthday but forgetting important things like medications and doctor's appointments shouldn't be taken lightly. If it happens frequently, it could indicate an onset of memory disorders. Try working on small ways to boost your parents' memory–puzzles and crosswords–and help them with visual reminders, like a dry erase board or calendar on the fridge. You must be patient with them and plan how they will get the help and care they require.
