Fire Safety Tips for Seniors

Fire Safety Tips for Seniors

It's essential to be aware of the changes that occur to our eyesight, hearing, and mobility as we age, as it allows us to take necessary precautions and ensure our safety. We can minimize the risk of fire-related incidents by taking proactive steps such as installing smoke detectors, keeping fire extinguishers handy, and having an evacuation plan. Although people over 65 may face a slightly higher risk, taking these preventative measures can help keep us safe and give us peace of mind, knowing that we are prepared for any situation.

Protect Yourself from Fire Hazards

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to protect yourself from a fire. The Electrical Safety Foundation recommends the following tips to minimize fire safety hazards around your home.

Home Heating Safety

Heating-related fires are the second leading cause of fire deaths among seniors. Cold weather increases the chance of a fire caused by a heating device, so pay attention to these tips over the next few months.

  • Place space heaters on level surfaces and inspect them for broken plugs and loose connections.
  • Keep space heaters away from furniture and other objects, and never leave them running unattended.
  • Do not plug a space heater into an extension cord; plug it directly into a wall outlet.
  • Get your furnace inspected regularly by a qualified service professional.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Have your chimney inspected annually, use a fireplace screen, and don’t leave a fire unattended.

Electrical Safety

Electrical failure accounts for a good portion of house fires. Older homes are especially at risk of electrical fires. Here’s what you can do to avoid a home electrical fire.

  • Have your electrical system inspected if your home is over 40 years old, has recently been renovated, or you’ve added new appliances within the last ten years.
  • Make it a priority to check power cords, outlets, switches, and appliances for any damage.
  • Use light bulbs that have the recommended wattage on light fixtures.
  • Don’t overload your power outlets.
  • Never run cords underneath the carpet or rugs.
  • Contact a licensed electrician if you have concerns about electrical problems throughout your home.

Cooking and Kitchen Safety

Cooking is the number one cause of fires and resulting injuries. These precautions will keep you safe while working in the kitchen.

  • Don’t leave the kitchen when using the stove; use a timer to remind yourself that you’re in the middle of cooking.
  • Wear tight-fitting clothing to avoid having sleeves catch on fire - also, store towels and dishcloths away from hot surfaces.
  • Keep your stovetop clean since spilled food can ignite, resulting in a fire.
  • Unplug countertop appliances when they’re not in use.
  • Clean exhaust hoods and ducts regularly.
  • Double-check that stove burners and appliances are turned off before you leave the kitchen.
