Medical Alert Devices for Seniors

Aging at home comes with many benefits, but there are also certain hazards that seniors and their families should be aware of. What happens if your parent has a sudden medical problem or encounters an emergency?

If your senior loved one has made the decision to remain living at home, you naturally want them to be as safe as possible. Here’s what you should know about medical alert devices, and how they can help your family member continue living with independence and security.

Different Types of Medical Alert Devices:

Modern medical alert devices come in a variety of forms, depending on the individual’s needs.

Here are some of the most popular examples:

  • Medical alert system: Typically comes with a necklace or bracelet the senior wears with a button that can be pushed in the event of an emergency. Could also include a base device that has a speaker. There are two varieties of these systems: monitored and unmonitored. With a monitored device, pushing the button will connect the senior with a live person via 911 or other services. They’ll be able to have a conversation with the emergency personnel. Unmonitored devices will call a friend, family member, or other assigned emergency contact, but won’t put you directly in touch with first responders.
  • Fall detection watch: Usually syncs with the senior’s smartphone to detect a fall when the watch is being worn. If a fall occurs, the watch will send an alert to the user who can choose to call emergency services. Some varieties will automatically call 911 or an emergency contact if the user doesn’t respond within a minute. Many of the watches also offer heart rate monitoring and other health-related features.

Benefits of Medical Alert Devices

  • Most medical alert devices connect to cellular data, so seniors don’t have to worry about needing Wifi. In the case of a wearable medical alert system, it’s not necessary to have your cell phone nearby.
  • Knowing that help is available with just a push of a button provides peace of mind to both seniors and their family members.
  • A wearable device is typically small, comfortable, and becomes part of the individual’s daily routine, similar to putting on their wedding ring or glasses.
  • The devices are usually straightforward and easy for the senior to use.
  • Insurance sometimes covers the cost of these devices. Even without insurance, the price is typically affordable- especially in comparison to the costs of assisted living.
