Creating a Safer Home Environment for Seniors

Creating a Safer Home Environment for Seniors

According to a survey conducted by AARP, the majority of adults age 50 and above state they want to age in their own homes and own communities. However, according to this same survey, only 59 percent of respondents who prefer to age-in-place anticipate being able to do so.

There are numerous factors to consider as adults reach retirement age and beyond. Health, cognition, and the presence of a support network all contribute to an older adult’s ability to remain in their own home. Another element that is often overlooked is the older adult’s home environment. The home itself can pose a challenge to some older adults; especially as chronic health conditions set in.

Fortunately, most homes can be adapted to allow older adults to remain in their familiar, preferred environment. With a little planning and rearranging, older adults can enjoy their golden years without having to move to a senior care community. Here are four tips for creating a safer environment for seniors.

Remove Hazards

Seniors have a higher risk for falls, and that risk increases as they grow older. Start by removing potential hazards around the home to create a safer home environment. Remove loose throw rugs and other tripping hazards, such as unsecured cords. Check each outlet to make sure they aren’t overloaded with devices or appliances. Install surge protectors to help prevent a potential electrical fire. Switch from open-flamed candles to battery-operated ones. Make sure all medications are properly labeled and stored. Also verify that other hazardous chemicals, such as cleaning products, are clearly labeled and placed in a secure location.

Clear Pathways

While you’re removing hazards, create a safer home environment by ensuring that all pathways remain clear. Walk each pathway throughout your home that you walk on a regular basis. Identify potential dangers, such as clutter, loose floorboards or carpet, and cords, and remove or secure as necessary. Rearrange your furniture layout to allow for a better flow and clear furniture from overcrowded rooms. Check that stairways remain clutter-free and that each pathway is adequately lit. Install motion-sensor nightlights to illuminate pathways at night.

Evaluate Water Temperatures

Another area in the home most seniors don’t even think about is their water. Hot water temperatures during a shower can result in a severe burn for seniors whose skin is thinning due to age. It takes only a few seconds for hot water to scald an older adult. Create a safer place in the home by setting the water heater thermostat to about 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, monitor the water temperature before stepping into the shower or bath. Give water time to heat up before turning on the shower. Ask others in the household to refrain from flushing toilets, washing laundry, running the dishwasher, or using tap water while you bathe to prevent a hot water spike.

Install Safety Products

Finally, create a safer place in the home by installing safety products where needed. Most seniors benefit from grab bars installed in the bathroom, both inside and outside of the bathtub or shower and around the toilet. High-rise toilets are another option for seniors who want to stay in their own homes. Stairways should have handrails on at least one side, but both sides are preferable. Smart devices installed throughout the home make calling for help extremely easy, especially if a senior falls and can’t get to a phone.
