Getting Away with Senior Loved Ones: A Guide for Travel

Getting Away with Senior Loved Ones: A Guide for Travel

Winter in Minnesota can leave us desperately searching for sunshine and warmth. But for those who care for aging parents or grandparents, the idea of a winter vacation seems overwhelming. It isn't an impossible feat, however. With some planning and a thoughtful approach, along with following these helpful tips, you can create a safe and memorable experience for the whole family.

Preparing for Takeoff

Doctors Orders:

Before making extensive plans and packing your bags, be sure that your elder travel companions have recently visited with their physician. Be sure they let them know of the duration of the trip and what activities may be planned so they can share any concerns they may have and rule out any potential health concerns. It is extremely important to make sure that their medications are up-to-date and that they have enough supply, you don’t want to be scrambling to try and get refills while away from home.

Medications should all be clearly labeled and accessible. Keep medications on board with you in your or your loved one’s carry-on bags, just in case checked luggage gets lost or delayed. It doesn’t hurt to ask for a doctor’s note to keep with you as well that details any medical conditions in case of emergency. Prevention and preparedness are key to a successful trip!

Creating Your Itinerary:

When making plans about where to go and what to do, consider your senior’s physical limitations and their interests. Try to find destinations with walkable adventures, accessible accommodations if they require a wheelchair or walker, and consider their pace when choosing activities. Think along the lines of destinations that offer historical museums in popular cities, scenic drives along the coast or through national parks, or even beaches where seniors can enjoy watching the family play in the ocean.

Seek out accommodations that cater to seniors and their needs. Ask for ground-floor rooms at hotels, and if your loved one has mobility challenges, request rooms with an accessible bathroom such as low to no entry showers and grab bars. A comfortable environment will ensure a good night’s sleep and can help create a sense of home away from home.  After a long day of sightseeing and activity, having a place to come back to and relax will help get everyone ready for the next day’s adventure.

Packing Up:

Packing for seniors is a challenge in and of itself. Pack supportive, comfortable shoes, all necessary medications and any personal care items they will need. It is also a good idea to keep a first aid kit on hand, and don’t forget things like chargers and any documentation needed for travel. If space is available, it can also be helpful to include a favorite blanket or pillow to create a sense of home while away. If you’re traveling by air, consider potential needs during layovers or delayed or canceled flights.

Less is more when it comes to packing clothes, but it is essential that comfortable and versatile items are included. Packing items that can be layered and worn multiple times is best. Ensure they have clothes that will keep them warm on cool nights, but that will also serve well in the heat of the day. Light, comfortable layers are your best friend!

Enjoying Your Time Together

Making Memories

Limit the activities to match their level of energy and stamina. Don’t try to pack too many things into each day; allow time to relax and recharge. Remember, vacations are about creating memories and enjoying your family, not trying to run a marathon. It’s ok to be spontaneous. Sometimes, the best moments happen during unplanned set-backs or detours. Though having a plan helps guide your time away, be open to change and look for hidden opportunities you may not have planned for.

Traveling with your senior loved ones can add some extra work and considerations, but it can be an experience everyone will remember. Don't be afraid to pack your bags and head out on an adventure. By prioritizing their needs, safety and comfort, you can create a vacation that will foster connection and create lasting memories. Go out and experience the world!
