Outdoor Activities for Caregivers and Seniors to Enjoy

After spending most of the last year indoors, it feels extra refreshing to spend time outside this summer. If you’re looking for something fun to do with your caregiver, consider a few of these senior-friendly outdoor activities.

Hiking

If you enjoy going for walks, consider taking an adventure with your caregiver to one of the many hiking trails near Wayzata. Whether you’re looking to take a stroll to enjoy the scenery or you want a more challenging hike to build up your cardio, there’s a trail for you. Some popular options include the Dakota Rail Regional Trail, The Luce Line State Trail, and Three Rivers Park District.

Before going on a hike, make sure to eat a well-balanced and filling meal that will provide you with the energy needed to complete the hike. Also, be sure to bring lots of water and wear sunscreen to protect your skin, even on cloudy days. Lastly, don’t hesitate to take breaks if you’re feeling tired, and let your caregiver know if you’re feeling lightheaded or nauseous at any time.

Fishing

Minnesota is the land of 10,000 lakes, and what better way to spend a summer afternoon than fishing on a beautiful lake. If you’ve never fished before, ask your caregiver to bring you to a bait and tackle shop for a fishing rod, bait, and other supplies. If after your first fish experience you decide you might make a hobby of it, you can also purchase a fishing vest and tackle box to keep your fishing supplies organized. Once you’ve got all your supplies, pick your favorite body of water and enjoy a day on the shore.

If you are a Minnesota resident under 89, you may need a valid Minnesota fishing license to fish. As a resident, you can fish in most state parks without a permit, but be sure to check fishing regulations with your caregiver.

Farmers Markets

Farmers markets are not only a fun way to pass the time with your caregiver, but it’s also a great place to find fresh produce and artisan goods. If you want to turn your trip to the farmers market into a full-day activity, challenge yourself and your caregiver to make a meal just using stuff you can find at the market. After you make your purchases, hop in the kitchen with your caregiver and see what tasty creation you can create.

Two nearby markets include the Wayzata Farmers Market and the Minnetonka Farmers Market. Make note that most farmer’s markets are only open one or two days a week, so be sure to plan accordingly.

Picnic

Everyone eats, so why not make mealtime a fun experience with a picnic for you and your caregiver. You can keep your picnic simple with premade food from your local grocery store or favorite restaurant. Or you can spend time in the kitchen with your caregiver and create your own feast.

Once you’ve got your food, it’s time to pick the spot. There are plenty of parks near Wayzata to choose from, such as Bennett Family Park or Lone Lake Park. If traveling isn’t possible, you can set up a picnic in your yard. Make sure to bring plenty of water if it’s a hot day, and don’t forget something to sit on, such as a portable chair or large pillows if you’re unable to sit on the hard ground.
