The Selection Process
During the selection process we allow you to interview the Visiting Angels senior home care caregivers. After your selection, our caregivers follow your schedule in order to ensure comfort of your elderly loved ones.
In the 1980's Jeffrey Johnson was employed as Director of Social Work in a nursing home in the Baltimore, Maryland area. He listened as families of clients often expressed frustration with having few alternatives other than to place their loved ones in the nursing facility. Before long, Jeffrey resolved to establish his own business to provide care for homebound senior citizens.
In the summer of 1991, Jeffrey resigned from his position with the nursing home and started a private duty non-medical home care agency called "The Senior Care Group, Inc." in Baltimore. Now in its second decade, the agency that Jeffrey established has serviced a great number of clients, and has established an excellent reputation in the Baltimore, MD area.
The Birth of Visiting Angels
In 1998, Jeffrey joined with three other directors (including two with extensive experience operating their own private duty non-medical home care agencies) to establish Visiting Angels as a nationwide network of home care agencies. In just 4 years this goal had been realized.
The directors of Visiting Angels have always held the philosophy that they are in business to provide the best care possible to seniors in the state of Florida and others who need in home care while showing the upmost respect to the care giving staff. It's their belief that our network of franchised Visiting Angels home care agencies in Florida should have the very best in training and support so that elderly clients will receive top quality care wherever the need exists. That's why Visiting Angels is "America's Choice In Homecare", and especially in the Sunshine state.
Florida’s Growing Elderly Population
The growth rate of the elderly population in Florida (aged 65 and over) is anticipated to increase from 19 percent in 1993 to 26 percent in 2020. Florida is currently estimated to be one of the leading states in elderly population, and is expected to have the highest projected proportion by 2025. Accordingly, the need for senior home care services in Florida’s cities is growing at a proportional rate.
What Led You to Look for In-Home Services for Your Loved Ones?
My husband and I started taking our kids to Florida shortly after my parents moved there. When the girls were little we took them to a bunch of the theme parks like Disney World and Busch Gardens. My parents rode the roller coasters with the kids and helped them win stuffed animals. We would all go canoeing at local parks and count how many gators we could spot in the water. One time my parents took the girls to the Mote Museum to show them where injured wild animals were being rehabilitated. My daughters really enjoyed spending time with their grandparents.
But as the years went by I saw my parents start to slow down. My mom spent more time in doors playing bridge and my dad spent less time out on the golf field. They used to spend all day playing with the girls on Venus Beach looking for shark teeth, but now they couldn’t keep up that level of enthusiasm. Instead, they spent more time sitting under the umbrella until the heat got to be too much for them, at which point they’d go back to the house. They were doing alright, but I knew it was just a matter of time until they really started to have problems.
Sure enough my mom broke her hip while swimming in the ocean and later, her shoulder. My dad was able to take care of her but then he had a heart attack. After that, things were pretty hectic. Taking care of two people on top of my own family was exhausting. All of my dad’s pills and doctor appointments became really hard to juggle. That’s where an in-home nurse really made a difference.
