In the 1980's Jeffrey Johnson was employed as Director of Social Work in a nursing home in the Baltimore, Maryland area. He listened as families of clients expressed their frustration with having very little alternatives other than to place their loved ones in the nursing home. Touched by these stories, Jeffrey resolved to establish his own business to provide care for homebound senior citizens.
In the summer of 1991, Jeffrey left the nursing home to start a private duty non-medical home care agency called "The Senior Care Group, Inc." in Baltimore. Now in its second decade, Jeffrey’s agency has serviced numerous clients, and has established an excellent reputation in the Baltimore area.
The Birth of Visiting Angels
Seven years after the inception of “The Senior Care Group, Inc.”, Jeffrey joined three other directors (two of whom had extensive experience operating their own private duty non-medical home care agencies) to establish Visiting Angels as a nationwide network of home care agencies. With over 450 locations, this goal had been fulfilled.
The Visiting Angels directors have always held the philosophy that they are in business to provide the best care possible to seniors in the state of Pennsylvania while showing the upmost respect to their staff. It is their belief that our network of Visiting Angels franchises in Pennsylvania should have the very best in training and support so that elderly clients will receive premium quality care wherever the need exists. That's why Visiting Angels is "America's Choice In Homecare", and especially in the Keystone State.
Pennsylvania’s Growing Elderly Population
The growth of the elderly population in Pennsylvania (aged 65 and over) is anticipated to increase from 15.9 percent in 1995 to 21 percent in 2025. Pennsylvania is currently estimated to have the 16th highest proportion of elderly by 2025. Accordingly, the need for senior home care services in Pennsylvania’s cities is growing at a proportional rate.

What Led You to Look for In-Home Services for Your Loved Ones?
It doesn’t seem like it was that long ago that I was constantly running my four kids back and forth between doctor appointments, basketball lessons, sleepovers or the pool. Fortunately, my parents lived close by and helped out a lot. They were very involved and always wanted to show the kids something new. One year they spent a few days in Philadelphia visiting the Ben Franklin Institute and going on the Duck Tours. When the kids got a little bit older, my parents took them to Hershey Park one week and Dutch Wonderland the next.
By the time my youngest was halfway through college, my parents were at the point where they tired easily. They were no longer able to handle the long car ride to visit my brother up in Erie at Presque Isle State Park, and play with the kids on the beach. I worried when we were away from home that something would happen to them. We were the only family close by and I wasn’t comfortable with not being there in case one of them had an accident and ended up in the hospital.
Eventually my husband and I stopped doing a lot of things we enjoyed in order to take care of Mom and Dad. They had so many doctor appointments and medications to keep track of. It’s not that we didn’t love them, but taking care of them became a little too much for us. We wanted our lives back, but most importantly, we wanted to know that they were in good hands. That’s when my husband and I decided to talk to them about senior home care from Visiting Angels.
