How to Apply for Benefits with the Veterans Administration
Visiting Angels in Northern Idaho is available to assist Veterans and their families get started with their Veteran's Administration application(s) for HHA and/or Respite Care (homemaker and/or home health aide) services.
If you or your family served in the United States Military, there is a good chance you qualify for the Veteran benefits that can help with HHA and Respite assistance. Both of these programs are designed to help qualified Veterans offset the cost of in-home supportive care. These programs are both designed to help you in your home with daily living activities, The eligibility criteria for accessing Home Health Aide (HHA) and Respite Care services for Veterans are not restricted by age or disability. This means that both younger and older Veterans and Veterans with or without a service-related disability can apply for and receive these supportive services based upon clinical need.
HHA benefits are designed to help Veterans live independently in his or her own home, by assisting with everyday needs (ADL’s). Respite visits are provided to relieve the primary caregiver, who is often a spouse or other family member. If approved, you may receive help with:
- Personal needs - getting dressed, bathing, incontinence care, medication reminders, dementia care and ambulation needs; and
- Cooking meals, light housekeeping, and laundry.

Veterans, including both Wartime and Peacetime service members, follow these instructions, to get started with the Veterans Administration and/or call our office (208-415-1000) with any questions.
- Enroll with the VA (if not already) at https://www.va.gov/health-care/how-to-apply/;
- Fill out Form 10-10-EZ (follow instructions on the Veteran's va.gov site);
- Mail/submit the form (DON'T FORGET YOUR DD-214). If you need to request a duplicate, get in touch with the VA. Call Mann-Grandstaff at 509-434-7009 for specific instructions on filling out and mailing;
- If you need additional help to navigate the process, our local Spokane American Legion located at 4815 N. Assembly, Bldg 6A, Spokane, WA may be able to assist. Their number is 509-434-7750;
- Schedule an assessment with a Veterans Administration doctor, and he or she will determine physical needs. To locate a VA provider, you can call 509-434-7026 for assistance;
- Request Home Health Aide (HHA) and/or Respite visits and request Visiting Angels of Coeur d'Alene and Surrounding Areas be your provider;
- HHA and respite visits are then assigned (based on need). Once an Authorization (Referral Notice) is faxed to our office by the Spokane VA Medical Center, care can begin often within a week. They do their very best to get your care scheduled ASAP;
- Visiting Angels of Coeur d'Alene will directly bill the VA for approved care, and no bills or invoices will be sent to you. Visiting Angels of Coeur d’Alene and Northern Idaho is an Authorized Community Network Provider, which allows us to work with the Department of Veteran Affairs directly to provide eligible Veterans with private in-home care services. We can also help point you or your family to the right contacts within the VA who will assist you in applying for the appropriate benefits; and
