Getting Seniors Moving More Each Day

Getting Seniors Moving More Each Day

Everyone should exercise, but seniors are especially encouraged to do so. As well as maintaining strength, flexibility, and mobility, exercise improves mood and reduces depression and anxiety in seniors. The benefits of exercise include improving sleep, maintaining independence, and reducing chronic disease risk.

If you have become sedentary over the last few years, make exercise a priority this month. Before starting an exercise program, speak with your healthcare provider. Then, try some of the ideas below to help you stay active.

Walk More

Walking is a low-impact exercise that is easy to do. There is no equipment required, and it can be done almost anywhere. Take more walks to get more movement into your day. After getting your mail, walk around the block. Start your day with a walk or go for a walk instead of taking an afternoon nap. Get more exercise and socialization by joining a walking club like Walk Virginia.

Take a Dip

Seniors with joint issues or mobility limitations can also benefit from swimming, which is a low-impact activity. The Manassas Park Community Center natatorium offers a variety of water activities, such as open-lane swimming and water aerobics. If joint pain prevents you from moving, join a local pool to help you get more exercise.

Join a Senior Fitness Class

Fitness classes for seniors have many benefits, not only physically but also socially and mentally. Prince William County has a number of fitness options available for seniors. Explore the group exercise schedule at The Manassas Park Community Center. Check out the senior fitness classes Area Agency on Aging Senior Centers offers. If transportation prevents you from participating in your preferred group fitness class, see what transportation services are available to you.
