Planning Helps Ensure Enjoyable Family Gatherings

Planning Helps Ensure Enjoyable Family Gatherings

Many older adults happily anticipate the seasonal parties that occur among family members. December is an especially busy and festive time, but making the most of it takes a bit of strategic preparation. It isn’t like the old Norman Rockwell paintings of the 1940s when the family gathered around the bountiful family table. Today’s ancestral dinners may include blended families, firm requests to put away cell phones, and various dietary requests and restrictions.

The advantage for older adults is that they’ve seen it all. After successfully progressing through the many seasons of life, most just want to savor the pleasure of continuing to create family memories. Older adults are great at playing supporting roles at significant family events.

Engage in a Way That Makes You Comfortable

  • Consider your needs and the gifts you want to share when thinking about an upcoming family dinner, party, or reunion that includes people of all ages. For example, let the host know if you may welcome a place to savor some “alone time.” Can you rest in a den or a spare bedroom if the festivities become tiring? (If that’s impossible, just find a comfy couch and settle in.)
  • If there are dietary restrictions, let the host know in advance, or, if need be, consider bringing food with you.

What About the Younger Generations?

In many families, grandparents can shine, especially if they do some planning with their grandchildren's parents. For example, maybe you can have a” cheat sheet” with stimulating questions to engage the young in lively conversation. Here are a few to get your wheels turning: “If you had three wishes, what would they be? Who is the person you most admire, and why? If you found a buried treasure worth a million dollars, how would you spend it?”

Capitalize on the value of open-ended questions, those queries that can't be answered with a simple “yes” or no.” Rather, rely on these magical conversation starters borrowed from journalism: “who, what, when, where, why,” and sometimes “how.” (Tip: talk to your adult children in advance to find out about the grandkids’ latest passion.) For example, consider a grandchild who finds out you are aware they love Taekwondo, the ancient Korean martial art that includes more than just physical abilities. They may be thrilled to regale you with why they became interested, what they love about the activity, and more.

Family Albums and Old Films are Magical

Many grandchildren enjoy seeing pictures of their moms and dads as kids. Old pictures are a sure thing for laughs, entertaining nostalgia, and sharing anecdotes, funny stories, and family history. To add to the fun and keep the tradition of recording family history alive, ask a few people to take a few great snapshots and some videos; all they need is a cell phone, which makes it super easy.
