When caring for a loved one is your main priority, whether they are a spouse, parent, grandparent, or relative, you may feel the urge to put your own needs on the back burner. However, setting your needs for self-care and time alone aside can backfire. Many family caregivers who push themselves to the limit realize too late that they've entered a state of exhaustion known as caregiver burnout. If you want to avoid caregiver burnout while continuing to meet your loved one's senior care needs, you can get started with respite home care from the trustworthy team at Visiting Angels® The Villages, Florida.

What is Respite Care?

Respite care provides a lifeline for family caregivers, allowing them to take time off, whether it be for a few hours or several weeks, when they have other responsibilities to handle or when they simply need a break. For overworked unpaid family caregivers, respite care from Visiting Angels The Villages represents so much more than professional senior home care. We ensure that the services we deliver are specifically designed to accommodate the preferences of family caregivers and the home care needs of their loved ones. From respite home care visits on a frequent schedule to a temporary period of support, our care plans and schedules can take various forms that suit the different needs of families in The Villages and beyond. If you're looking for additional connection and support, consider joining Caregiver Support Groups in The Villages, FL to connect with peers who understand your journey.

How Does Respite Care Help Family Caregivers?

Respite care is for the primary caregiver. It’s a chance for them to go out and do the things they want to do—whether that’s grocery shopping, going out with friends, or just having time for themselves. At Visiting Angels The Villages, we see respite care as giving caregivers the time they need for themselves while making sure their loved one is cared for safely at home.

We do have a four-hour minimum per shift and twelve hours per week, but families can always add more time if they’d like. Some clients schedule short breaks, others plan for longer periods so they can travel or visit family. It’s all about flexibility and what works best for each household.

Care That Supports Both the Client and the Caregiver

When we come in to help, it’s not just for the client—it’s also for the spouse or family member. We might do laundry, meal prep, or light cleaning. Doing laundry for one person or for two doesn’t make much difference, and it gives that extra help the family needs. Even though our focus is on the client, we’re really taking care of both people.

One of the biggest goals of respite care is to give the caregiver peace of mind. They can go out and have a life, knowing they can trust who’s in their home. That’s why we go far beyond the required background checks. By law, everyone must have an FBI Level 2 background check, which only shows convictions. We also run national arrest record checks, driver’s license and Homeland Security screenings, and more. We do that because we live and work right here in The Villages, and our reputation is everything.

Building Trust in the Community

Here in The Villages, even though there are more than 100,000 seniors, it’s still a close-knit community. We live here, work here, and play here. People know us, and they know we care. Every client we serve gets my personal cell phone number—not on a business card, but in a note I send. I tell them, “If you’re ever not 100% satisfied with my staff, you call me directly.” That level of trust matters.

Why Respite Care Makes a Difference

Sometimes caregivers feel like they can do it all, but over time it wears them down. We’ve seen the statistics—caregivers often pass away before the person they’re caring for. It’s too high. Respite care can prevent that by giving them time to rest and breathe.

One of our clients told us after a few days of respite care, “Oh my God, I can’t believe you called me. I’m at my girlfriend’s house having a glass of wine. It’s the first time I’ve been able to get out of the house and really relax in six months.” That’s exactly why respite care exists—to give caregivers a chance to recharge and enjoy life again.

Client Story: Relaxing Thanks to Respite Care

After signing up for respite care, one wife got her very first break in six months.

Two days after our caregiver started, we called to check in. She answered the phone laughing. “Oh my gosh,” she said, “I can’t believe you called me. I’m at my girlfriend’s house having a glass of wine!”

It was the first time she’d been able to relax and truly enjoy herself in half a year. That’s what respite care can do — bring a little piece of normal life back for caregivers who have been carrying everything alone.
