Online Resources For Seniors

Online Resources For Seniors

While vast and sometimes overwhelming, the internet is full of useful resources. You can shop, order food for delivery, schedule appointments (and, for some, meet virtually) with your doctor, and locate nearby services without leaving the comfort of your favorite chair. The internet is also full of online resources specifically to help seniors with everything from understanding Medicare benefits to finding and affording quality food.

What Is An Online Resource?

An online resource is anything you use on the internet that provides value. Value is subjective, so everyone’s idea of the best online resources can vary. However, most resources help provide information, access, or assistance.

National Resources

National online resources are websites or companies that provide value to people throughout the United States, no matter where they live. A few national resources geared toward seniors include:

  • Administration On Aging: AOA is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It provides resources to help older adults and people with disabilities maximize their independence and well-being.
  • Meals On Wheels: This national program delivers affordable nutritional meals to homebound seniors. They also provide socialization, home repair services, and pet assistance.
  • AARP: This organization advocates on important issues affecting seniors in the United States, such as Social Security and healthcare. They also offer discounts and services to seniors through their membership.
  • National Elder Law Foundation: This national non-profit, accredited by the American Bar Association, works with seniors who need legal services such as preparing a will, understanding guardianship, or drafting a power of attorney.
  • The Seniors Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program: This program helps seniors access locally grown fruits, vegetables, honey, and herbs from local farms and roadside stands.

Local Resources

Local online resources are websites and organizations that primarily work with residents of a specific area. A few local resources that cater to Farmington and the greater New Mexico area include:

  • New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department: This resource is a hub for additional resources to help New Mexico seniors live safe and independent lives. You can find information on elder rights, dementia, adult protective services, and Medicare.
  • New Mexico Grown Program: This program helps seniors in New Mexico access fresh fruits and vegetables grown in the state as part of a senior meal program.
  • NM Department of Veteran Services: Veterans and their spouses can utilize the services offered at the NM Department of Veteran Services, such as affordable health care and education services.
