What Seniors Need to Know About Caffeine

What Seniors Need to Know About Caffeine

March is National Caffeine Awareness Month, providing the perfect opportunity for us all to take stock of our caffeinated habits. Although some studies have demonstrated that consuming caffeine can be beneficial to our health, too much caffeine can be detrimental to our health. As older adults make up the largest cohort of coffee consumers, it’s important that they’re aware of the pros and cons of caffeine. Here are four things seniors need to know about caffeine.

Sources of Caffeine

There are multiple sources of caffeine, beyond a cup of coffee. Caffeine is in black and green teas, soft drinks, and energy drinks. It can also be found in chocolate, protein bars, and certain medications. Coffee-flavored desserts contain caffeine and do not bake out when it’s used in recipes. Decaffeinated beverages, such as teas or coffees, remove most of the caffeine, not all. Seniors need to be aware that caffeine is found in more than just their coffee. All sources of caffeine should be considered when taking stock of how much caffeine a senior consumes.

The Benefits

Consuming caffeine appears to have a few health benefits, especially for older adults. One study found that seniors who consume moderate amounts of caffeine lower their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease by 65 percent, and Parkinson’s disease by 60 percent. Caffeine is associated with a longer life span and may lower the risk for certain cancers. Studies have also shown that long-term coffee consumption is associated with a reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes in healthy older adults. Caffeine also helps to boost memory, concentration, and energy levels.

The Risks

On the other hand, too much caffeine can be detrimental to the health of an older adult. Older adults can become dependent on caffeine and may experience withdrawal symptoms when they try to cut back. Caffeine increases blood pressure, if only for a short time. Yet, the dramatic increase over and over may cause long-term damage. Too much caffeine interferes with sleep, preventing seniors from falling asleep and staying asleep all night long. Research shows that older adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes react differently to caffeine. Caffeine, even in low doses, can cause blood sugar and insulin levels to spike.

Safe Caffeine Consumption

When it comes to caffeine consumption, consuming in moderation is truly best. Older adults should prioritize healthier sources of caffeine, such as coffee or tea, instead of sugary sodas and coffee-flavored desserts. Remember that caffeine can be found in certain medications. Talk with your doctor about which medications contain caffeine and include the caffeine content in your daily caffeine intake. The Food and Drug Administration recommends up to 400 milligrams of caffeine, or four to five cups of coffee, a day for healthy adults. Older adults may need to cap their daily intake at a lesser amount, depending on their overall health. Ask your doctor about how much caffeine is safe for you to consume based on your health and medications.
