How to Celebrate Older Adults in Boulder County on National Senior Citizens Day

Here are some fun ways to celebrate National Senior Citizens Day with your elderly loved one in Boulder County

Did you know that August 21st is National Senior Citizens Day? While at Visiting Angels of Boulder County, we believe that seniors should be celebrated every single day, we also recognize the importance of having everything they have done for our country recognized on a special holiday dedicated just to them.

This holiday is a great opportunity to spend quality time with the older adults in your life. If you're looking for fun activities you can do with loved ones in Boulder County, Visiting Angels can help.

A Holiday We All Should Cherish

National Senior Citizens Day is not as known or popular as holidays like Mother's Day or Father's Day. However, it is just as important as those holidays, with its popularity rising each year.

National Senior Citizens Day was made a national holiday in 1988, this being the 31st year when we can honor our elders on their special day. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law with a presidential proclamation including the following words:

"For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute."

Another important thing Reagan said is that we as Americans should "[make] sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older." As one the leading providers of in-home elder care services for families in Boulder County, we at Visiting Angels believe these words are now more significant than ever, representing the basis of senior care not just provided by professionals and agencies but by communities as a whole.

Celebrating the Holiday with Your Loved One

This National Senior Citizens Day, make sure to spend the holiday with your senior loved one. Throughout the nation, many restaurants, stores, and other establishments provide discounts and promotions on the holiday, so you may wish to do something nice for your loved one like taking them out for dinner at Janie's Café or shopping for the perfect gift in Downtown Longmont.

Since it's summer, why not spend some time outside? You can your loved one can walk along the trails at St. Vrain Greenway or enjoy a nice picnic on the Boulder Creek Path. Also, consider checking out indoor and outdoor performances at the Longmont Museum and Cultural Center.

As our elder care providers point out, however, a day spent in the comfort of their home can be just as pleasant, if not even more enjoyable. You can buy local produce and goods at the Boulder Farmers Market and prepare your loved one's favorite dish, play games with them or just have a meaningful conversation.
