At Visiting Angels, we know that asking for help can be hard. The caregivers in our Veterans Care program understand how important your independence is. That's why we provide personalized, non-medical home care for veterans that respects their past, present, and future needs.

Our caregivers come directly to the client’s Santa Fe home. We make sure our help means you can sleep in your own bed, stick to those familiar routines, and stay active in the community. Your family will gain the reassurance from knowing a trusted caregiver is present when they can't be.

Every day, we support veterans who:

• Live with injuries or disabilities from their time in the military
• Have Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or another memory condition
• Have Parkinson’s disease or another chronic condition
• Notice changes in strength, balance, or mobility
• Experience changes in vision or hearing
• Had a recent hospital or rehabilitation stay
• Require supervision during the day or overnight
• Need regular conversation and companionship

Home Care That Honors Your Routine

Veterans' care isn't a one-size-fits-all program. While veterans may have their service in common, their needs can vary. One client may need help getting to doctor's appointments and social activities. Another veteran dealing with dementia may need extra help throughout the day and night.

No matter what your needs are, every Veterans Care program starts with a conversation. We listen to you and your family before we create your personalized care plan. You'll benefit from one-on-one attention that doesn't overstep. We provide the services you need without anything you don't want.

We understand your independence is an important part of staying happy and healthy. Our caregivers encourage clients to remain involved in tasks whenever possible. This approach protects our clients' dignity and helps them retain a sense of control over their day.

Veterans Care may include:

• Showering or bathing assistance
• Grooming help, including styling hair and shaving
• Healthy meal preparation and clean up
• Light housekeeping including vacuuming, dishes,and dusting
• Laundry care, including washing, folding and ironing
• Medication reminders to help you stay on track
• Mobility and transfer assistance
• Transportation to medical appointments, the pharmacy, and social outings
• Grocery shopping and other errands
• 24-hour in-home care

If your spouse or relative currently handles most of the caregiving duties, we can include respite care in the plan. You and your family can determine what schedule is most helpful.

How Veterans Can Get Help Paying for Home Care

One question we hear frequently is, "Will my VA benefits cover home care expenses?" There are several programs that may provide assistance, but your individual circumstances determine your eligibility and coverage. Potential funding sources include:

• VA Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care: Helps eligible veterans receive support with personal care and household activities.
• VA Aid and Attendance: Provides an increased monthly pension to cover help with daily tasks.
• VA Community Care Network: Gives approved services from community providers.

The Department of Veterans Affairs will determine whether or not you are eligible for these programs.
