6 Ways for Seniors to Enjoy Life as They Age

6 Ways for Seniors to Enjoy Life as They Age

Growing old does not mean you’re required to slow down. It’s crucial for seniors to continue to learn and explore as they age to maintain both their mental and physical health.

Tips for Staying Happy and Healthy Through Retirement

Many significant changes take place as we get older, such as downsizing homes, losing loved ones, retiring from long term careers, and encountering health issues. By staying active and engaged, you can make these transitions easier. Here are some tips for living a fulfilling life into your golden years.

Stay Connected

Social isolation puts seniors at risk of cognitive decline and other health problems. Schedule some time each day to chat with a friend or close family member.

If you’re interested in meeting new people, check out one of the senior clubs offered through the Scotch Plains Parks and Recreation department. To learn about neighborhood and community events, create an account on Next Door

Travel and Explore

A change of scenery is good for the body and soul. You don’t have to go far or spend a lot of money to experience the many benefits of travel. Take a day trip to a nearby city, explore a new museum, or visit a friend who lives in a different state. These novel experiences will no doubt provide enrichment and create great memories.

Visit the Doctor Regularly

It can seem like an endless cycle of doctor appointments for some seniors, but regular checkups and health screenings will allow your doctor the chance to catch any health risk factors, like high blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as detect chronic disease before it becomes serious.

Keep Learning

Research shows that having hobbies and activities decreases your chances of developing certain health issues and increases overall well being. Look for opportunities to participate in new experiences, whether that’s taking a pilates class at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA or volunteering at a local animal shelter.

Protect Your Cognitive Health

Our cognitive abilities tend to decline as we grow older. Fortunately, there are some factors that we have control over. To keep your mind sharp, be sure to get 150 minutes of exercise per week, limit alcohol consumption, and participate in plenty of mentally stimulating activities, like reading or completing jigsaw puzzles.

Celebrate Milestones

You’ve accomplished a lot in your life, and that deserves to be recognized! Invite friends over for parties, host family gatherings, and treat yourself to big birthday gifts. Now is the time to celebrate.
