Cold and Flu Tips for Older Adults

Cold and Flu Tips for Older Adults

As we age, our immune system struggles to fight off infections as well as it did in our younger years. Even the common cold could pose a severe risk to seniors. That’s why taking proper precautions to prevent illness is so important for older adults.

How to Prevent and Treat Sickness

Cold and flu season typically runs all throughout winter and into spring. Here is some common-sense advice for staying healthy during this time.

Healthy Habits

Viruses are highly contagious, but there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of contracting an illness. We do not provide medical services or advice at Visiting Angels, so we turned to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for their recommendations on how to prevent contracting or spreading the flu:

  • Avoid crowded indoor spaces, such as large shopping malls and airplanes, during cold and flu season. If you must spend time in busy areas, wear a face mask.
  • Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth to avoid spreading germs.
  • Stay up to date on vaccines for everyone six months and older, especially the flu vaccine.
  • It may sound like common sense, but regular hand washing is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of germs. Be sure to scrub your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer when soap and water aren’t available.
  • Maintain an overall healthy routine that includes a nutritious diet, drinking plenty of water, regular exercise, and adequate sleep.
  • Use disinfectant, especially after you’ve had visitors. Use an antibacterial spray on doorknobs, countertops, and bathrooms.
  • Run an air purifier inside your home to keep fresh air circulating.

At-Home Cold Remedies

If you or your loved one happens to catch a nasty virus, don’t panic. Consult your doctor, stay home, and try these at-home treatments

  • Eating chicken soup has been shown to reduce inflammation and actually slow infection.
  • If you have a headache or fever, NSAID pain relievers can be helpful if your doctor or pharmacist approves your use.
  • Gargling with salt water can help loosen mucus, as well as ease a sore throat.
  • Hot tea with honey and lemon is also helpful for soothing throat pain.
  • Sleep at a 45-degree angle and elevate your head to prevent mucus from gathering in your sinuses.
  • Try over-the-counter saline nasal drops to help relieve congestion.
  • Rub petroleum jelly on sore nostrils and chapped lips.
  • Rest is essential to heal your body. Get as much sleep as possible while you’re sick.
