Tips for Dealing with Post-Holiday Blues

Tips for Dealing with Post-Holiday Blues

Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve is generally joyful and filled with fun activities and events that unite families. But what happens after the holiday excitement has died down? For many people, particularly older adults, the remainder of winter brings feelings of loneliness and depression. Cold and dreary weather only amplifies these sad emotions.

How to Support a Loved One with Seasonal Depression

If your senior relative lives alone or far away from their friends and family, they may be experiencing post-holiday blues or even social isolation. It can be challenging to know how to cheer them up. Here are five suggestions for boosting your family member’s spirits this winter.

Help Them Plan Activities

It’s important for older adults to have things to look forward to in order to keep positive momentum going. Offer to help your loved one make plans, whether taking a day trip together or setting up a dinner with friends. They’ll appreciate the time and effort and will be excited to have an event scheduled on their calendar.

Make Sure They Get Adequate Sleep

Getting enough sleep is crucial to preventing health issues like diabetes and high blood pressure and maintaining overall well-being. If your loved one has insomnia, you can suggest remedies such as limiting caffeine and taking warm baths before bed. If you’re concerned that their lack of sleep disrupts their daily life, talk to their physician about further interventions.

Support Healthy Eating

Consuming a variety of healthy foods has a significant effect on our mood. Encourage your senior family member to incorporate mood-boosting foods like salmon, oats, fresh fruit, and nuts into their diet. Make a plan to prepare healthy meals for them or schedule a meal delivery service to help ease concerns about their nutrition.

Encourage Physical Activity

Regular exercise has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression symptoms. If weather allows, walk with your loved one, suggest doing an online workout together, or help them sign up for a low-impact workout class at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA

Have Them Connect with Friends and Family

Help your loved one stay in touch with grandkids and family via video calls, email, and social media. Invite them to visit people in person so they can remain socially active during the colder months.

Another great way to help your loved one stay mentally and physically healthy during the winter is to encourage them to engage in indoor activities they enjoy. These could include reading, crafting, cooking, or playing games.
