Some of the places caregivers can take their clients are:
In 1954, the late Art Whizin purchased the property on Roadside Drive. He and his business partner, Vance Moran, later operated a small hamburger stand with 12 seats alongside a four-pump gas station. Art's son, Bruce Whizin, eventually joined the family business.
Over the years, the site underwent several transformations. The original Cornell Corners restaurant later became Wood Ranch. In 1955, Whizin and Moran built a rodeo arena, which was later replaced by a motorcycle dirt track. The property also hosted midget auto racing and a children's go-kart track.
Expansion continued in the 1960's and 1970's. The row of buildings now home to antique stores was constructed in 1962. The building that now houses The Canyon Club was added in 1973, followed by the former arcade- now known as The Atrium Court- in 1974. These developments helped establish Whizin Market Square as a longstanding community landmark.
Tom Runyon grew up exploring the hills of Southern California and developed a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors, local food, and community. After serving as a major in the Air Force during World War ll and investing in Malibu land, he discovered the abandoned Hank's Country Store and Cornell Post Office in the 1960's.
Seeing its potential, Tom purchased the property and transformed it into The Old Place, which opened in 1970. The restaurant quickly became a beloved gathering spot where people from all walks of life-from local ranchers and artist to Hollywood celebrities-could come together in a welcoming, unpretentious setting.
Over the years, Tom and his family expanded the property and helped revive the historic Cornell community. Today, Tom's son, Morgan Runyon, continues the family tradition, preserving The Old Place as a unique dining destination that celebrates history, character and community.
