HCA Training Programs for Caregivers in Washington

Home Care Aide (HCA) Classes

Visiting Angels offers Home Care Aide (HCA) classes in both English and Spanish at our Tacoma, WA office.

Our HCA instructors can now proctor their own students’ exams, helping to expedite the licensing process. This allows students to obtain active Home Care Aide status in Washington State more quickly and begin working sooner.

In this program, students learn the essential skills needed to become a successful caregiver and prepare for the Washington State licensing exam. Course topics include becoming a Home Care Aide, client-focused communication, medication assistance, activities of daily living (ADLs), HIV/AIDS awareness, and other important considerations for working in long-term care settings such as in-home care, adult family homes, assisted living communities, and retirement facilities.

The HCA training program consists of 32 hours of in-person instruction and 43 hours of online coursework. For students without access to a computer at home, we are happy to provide one for completing the online portion. Our training is highly effective because it combines hands-on skill practice with experienced instructors in the same location where testing takes place. This allows students to build confidence and receive real-time coaching. Our classroom also serves as a Washington State Regional Test Site, where Prometric administers the official HCA exams.

Work-To-Train Program

Visiting Angels offers a Work-to-Train program for employees, making it possible to earn a Home Care Aide (HCA) license without the burden of upfront costs. We cover the cost of the training course, state application, and testing fees on your behalf (click for a full list of fees and amounts). These expenses are then repaid through small, manageable payroll deductions.

Once you have completed the Work-to-Train program and remain in good standing with Visiting Angels, you will be reimbursed for half of the cost of the class.

Is your HCA license expired?

You can still be eligible for hire upon renewing your license! Expired licenses can be renewed by meeting the Department of Health’s requirements for Continuing Education and pay the fees. Review the Department of Health’s expired license application here.

Continuing Education Classes (CEUs)

The State of Washington requires all long-term care workers to complete 12 continuing education (CE) credits each year by their birthday. Visiting Angels supports our caregivers by offering FREE continuing education classes to our staff, as well as making these classes available to the public for a small fee.

Our hands-on CE classes are especially valuable for caregivers who learn best through seeing, hearing, and doing. In addition to practical skill-building, in-person classes provide a great opportunity to connect with and learn from other experienced caregivers.
