Spring Fun With Your Seniors

Spring Fun With Your Seniors

The calendar says it is officially spring. And although our senior loved ones aren’t exactly classified as spring chickens any more, that doesn’t mean we can’t have plenty of fun with them at this time of the year. It is a time of renewal, and a great time of the year to try something new with your senior loved one, to set out on an adventure that they’ve never experienced before and to do some tried and true favorites. Whether you’re up for hiking the loop at Challenger Seven park together, or planting an indoor garden with your homebound senior, find some fun things to do this season to celebrate another spring.

Here are some suggestions for spring fun with your senior loved ones.

Pack a Picnic

Whether you’re downing deviled eggs at a local park , or spreading the red and white checked tablecloth on your senior’s backyard patio table for a more low-key lunch, a picnic is a great way to celebrate spring. Feel the sun on your face as you enjoy the fresh air and dine alfresco.

Free Music, Sometimes with Fido

Listening to outdoor music is a fun way to celebrate spring and summer evenings with your favorite senior. Gather your senior loved one and your favorite dog and head over to Southtown Park in Pearland for a weekly free, unique, outdoor concert event. Every Friday in May and June there will be a live band playing from 7 to 9 p.m. You can bring along a lawn chair, food and fido, if he’s on a leash. There also will be food vendors available. The Miller Outdoor Theater in Houston has live performances throughout the summer you can take your senior too, as well. You can see everything from ballet to Motown.

Go For a Walk

It might sound simple, but going for walks with your senior is a great way to spend time together this spring. You can simply take a walk around the block, checking out what’s happening in the neighborhood. Or you can pick a new park or area to walk through once a week, getting to experience new areas of the community. Find out what your senior would most like to do, and see if there are any new areas they would like to explore on your walks.

Plant a Garden

Whether it’s a small herb garden or a larger vegetable garden, gardening is a great way to enjoy the spring weather outdoors and get some exercise. Believe it or not, pulling weeds as you tend to the garden is a lot of work. Plant something together, and see the flowers bloom throughout the season. Pick a favorite fruit to vegetable to show, and eat the fruits of your labor together. Maybe you can even pick some ingredients to grow for a dish you want to make together.

Local Markets

Hit some local markets this spring. Whether it is farmers markets or outdoor antique markets that apparel to your senior, plan some outings. Many local farmers markets vary in what they offer each week. Some have entertainment, some have fresh food, and some have loads of organic produce. See which one you like the best. Find a local flea market or antique market to visit each week, Or if you’re a true bargain hunter, check our local garage sales and yard sales together, and see who can find the most unique item for sale.

Bake Together

As fruits ripen and reach their peak times this spring and summer, gather some delicious produce and bake something together. Whether it’s blueberry brickle or apple crisp, have some fun in the kitchen together baking. Then eat your creations outdoors in the spring sunshine.
