Celebrating Women’s History Month With Visiting Angels
Women, in addition to men, remain a critical part of history. March was Women’s History Month, a time when the nation pauses to recognize those of the fairer sex for their efforts. As national communities celebrated female leaders past and present, Visiting Angels White Plains would like to share our thanks for the women responsible for paving the way for new generations to thrive.
The Origin of Women’s History Month
Women’s History Month began as Women’s History Day, first celebrated in March 1909. Over half a century prior, female factory workers gathered in the streets of New York City to protest their working conditions, inspiring other women to find their voices. In 1981, Congress established National Women’s History Week during the second week of March. Some six years later, Congress extended the week-long celebration to 31 days.
In the past, Women’s History Month has focused on timely issues women face in their daily lives. “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion” was the theme for March 2024. This theme highlighted women combatting discrimination and bias in their communities and brought awareness to the lack of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Proactive Ways to Celebrate Women’s History
There’s no one way to celebrate Women’s History Month, especially given how each woman uniquely contributes to her community. What’s important is recognizing how women have positively influenced each of us, from our mothers and grandmothers to aunts, sisters, cousins, and community members. Whether in March or any other time of the year, take a moment to appreciate the women who’ve made a difference in your life, regardless of how big or small.
Below are several resources you can use to celebrate women’s history throughout the year:
- Women’s History Month at the Smithsonian: The Smithsonian hosts several events during March to celebrate women, from the Women’s History Month Festival on March 9 to the many featured speakers and exhibits.
- The Defense Department: The Department of Defense (DOD) honors female military members throughout the year. Learn more about women’s military accomplishments, including the first active-duty female Army sniper.
- The National Park Service: Women’s History Month at the National Park Service incorporates women’s history from several angles, including women in World War II, women and the environment, national parks named in honor of women, and historic women of the National Park Service.
How will you celebrate the women in your life this year?
