Share Your Life Through a Legacy Letter

A new year is upon us. And as the years (and decades) fly by, many people discover a desire to communicate their stories—from the key lessons learned throughout their lives to the unforgettable events that shaped them. One meaningful way to create a permanent record of these life-changing moments is through a “legacy letter.” This is a personal statement one writes to share with their nearest and dearest, either before or after the end of a life. A legacy letter conveys so much that is at the core of one’s being—from the sharing of values to the essence of a personality.

A powerful document, the letter can be informal; there are no rules. The most significant thing about a legacy letter is that it helps put the writer in charge of how they wish people to remember them. It’s an open invitation to express gratitude, make amends if needed, and more.

Often, people say they don’t think they have anything “important” to communicate, but don’t be fooled. Celebrities, world leaders, and other famous types aren’t the only ones whose stories matter—quite the opposite. The anecdote shared by a grandmother about the time she took an unlikely chance on love, for example, will likely fascinate a grandchild and help them see her differently.

Why Your Legacy Matters

When older adults start pulling together their important documents—advance care directive, will, and the like—including a legacy letter can be a meaningful bright spot. Many folks are self-critical of their writing ability, but this letter isn’t about that. Although it’s valuable to share your thoughts verbally, putting them in writing gives them the permanence that serves future generations—including, importantly, even the ones who aren’t born yet).

A 10-Step Plan for Creating Your Legacy Letter

  1. Take time to focus and reflect. Consider the values, wisdom, and affection you want to impart. Next, choose the stories or experiences that will best communicate what you want to say.
  2. Remember, this is a letter, not a book. It should be no more than a few pages long, perhaps 3,000 words.
  3. This kind of undertaking requires openness to sharing both the highs and lows.
  4. A logical and often effective opening is the “why.” Why are you writing this document?
  5. Paint a word picture. Think about a grandchild or a friend, whoever the recipient of the letter will be. Let them know how you see yourself—and how that image may have changed over the years. Identify a few significant choices you’ve made that shaped you—such as moving away from your family or choosing a career path different from what others (or even yourself) may have predicted. What was the outcome? Is there a particular cause or charity to which you’ve been devoted? Why was it meaningful?
  6. Convey your values. Paragraphs like this one say a lot: “When life becomes difficult, as it often does, count on each other—your family members. Stay close, no matter where you live. Respect each other’s differences. Honor your commitments, whatever they may be. Find something to believe in and devote time to it—hopefully, many things.”
  7. Be honest about your regrets; we all have them. Share one or two. What did you learn from them?
  8. What are you most grateful for? Why? Be specific.
  9. Close with guidance and good wishes for the future.
  10. When the letter is completed, set it aside. Take another look in a week or two. When you’re happy with the finished product, make a few copies (and put it in a special file on a hard drive, if possible). Place a copy with those other significant documents your loved ones will need. In all likelihood, this one will hold a special place in their hearts.
